Bit of a thread dig! Did you end up getting an R? Keen to hear the outcome/thoughts on the potential R because I'm a MKV GTI owner with the same feelings as you initially said. Mine is 3dr Manual and I love it. Cars are getting so refined and smooth these days and I feel it's still got that degree of rawness that older cars have. I'd hate to regret moving it on at some point.

How's this for a mega revival!!

Just saw your message Tom. I ended up waiting just over 11 months for the car I ordered, and as chance would have it, I ended up buying something else at about the 11 month mark, just got ridiculous. Went back to VW and advised them that I'd purchased another car. They were so excited when I arrived as they could tell me my car was coming...... should have seen the smile turn upside down when my deposit was to be returned.

So how did you go? Did you make the move? Unfortunately I can't tell you now how they compare.

Sorry for the hideous thread revival. But I still like the R even though I replaced it with something else.

I've still got it, tweaked it a little more and I have a K04 that I might bolt on.. But now I'm beginning to wonder if I shouldn't do that and instead buy a factory K04 equiped car, along the lines of an ED35. Maybe I'll con the missus into getting one! I love the thought of having a MKV GTI in the garage for a few years to come but also I don't want an old euro car where things are expensive to fix and replace!

Funny, I'm with you, I've been looking at carsales for another little Mk V GTI I loved it so much, would be a great little run around. Feeling a little precious about what I bought which is silly and kind of makes having a car pointless, but a little GTI to take anywhere would be perfect.

Gotta say if I still had my MkV and was looking to upgrade, I think I'd be aiming squarely at the new GTI now that it's out. How's yours? Still lovin it?

Yeah, the new Mk7 is a pretty good car, stage 1 tunes are seeing some really good numbers! My Dad has one and he does say that it is less raw than mine, much more refined with linear power delivery. A great car but.

Yeah its gong well other than the air con compressor costing me around 1k just recently, coming up to 95000km. I still really enjoy it but, such a good car to drive in traffic and have some fun in

What did you buy instead of the R?

Damn, but who needs AC mate.

I sold mine with 105K on the clock and it was faultless all the way. Really kind of miss it now. My mate does VAG tuning and I'd somehow managed to resist modding the thing. Thought it was spot on the way it was.

I still look at Rs when I see them on the road, and when a White one comes by, still think they look brilliant. Missing the practicality now though, but certainly not the driving fun, cos I bought this...... and it's just all kinds of silly on the road...

You need to have a spin in a stage 1 or 2 GTI, its a whole different car!

How did I know it would be something from the M stable. 1M, I can't blame you for being protective of it, I'm protective enough with a dam GTI. I constantly find myself looking at E92 M3s on carsales, followed by the thought and knowledge that I need to buy property. A 1M is perfect though. I can understand the want for a run around GTI having that. Enjoy!

Funny you say, I drove about 4 different E92 M3s on 4 different occasions, it was the car I wanted but I never loved it. Tried and tried but it didn't feel right nor angry to me.

After 3 mins driving the 1M, I decided I had to have one. The 1M feels brutal compared to the M3 somehow. The in gear punch it gives is hilarious.

Will def look into the tunes if I get another GTI. What's yours and do you recommend it? My mate does REVO.
