My Mk 6 118 TSi has an air conditioning problem - on sunny but mild days, it is freezing in the cabin, even if I turn the controls to say 24 degrees. My dealer (Solitaire) says it is a known problem but they are waiting on a fix.
It's in the centre on top of the dash between the air vents for the screen. I thought it may be the sensor for the auto lights, but after adding some black tape to the inside, the cooling is definitely a lot better. Today I had the temp set at 22 (was 24 outside) and the fan started on four bars (as the car was warm after sitting in the sun for a bit), then went down to three after 5 mins or so, before settling on two bars. Cabin temp was comfortable. Previously it would stay on 4 bars and blast cold air out forever and I would end up turning the air con off it got that cold. (oh, and the auto lights still function as they did before the mod).

Mine doesn't blast cold air (unless its really hot), but set at 22 it will silently deliver cold air on a mild day, at just 1 or 2 bars. Once I turned it all off thinking I'd be fine but I was very surprised how quickly it got hot inside (< 1 min), so I just turn it up to 24 and it's fine.
I mistook the sensor for the bracing between the two windscreen vents. Confirmed yesterday by covering it that it work much better when it was covered. The sensor came out easily with a fingernail. I used a bit of thin vinyl from a freebie crap phone cover which I cut to size and put between the sensor and its holder. Working perfectly now.
I also found that a spider is living behind my rear vision mirror. I wonder if it's Aussie or German...
Yep, can confirm the 'fix' seems to do the trick. I was driving yesterday in 28 degrees for a couple of hours and had the temp set at 22. Fan was on 5 bars to start with, and finally settled on 2 bars throwing just enough cool air to maintain the right temperature. Previously it would blow cold air from the vents at fan 4. Still waiting for a mild day, say 20 degrees, before testing the other end of the scale. Hopefully it will still perform as it should rather than trying to get the cabin to -5.
