  • Dynamat - Professional Installation?

    Although my new MY11 Golf is nice and quiet <60km/hr on smooth urban roads - it was not as quiet as I wish on the concrete highways on the M3/M1 (Brisbane-Gold Coast) at 100+km/hr.

    I am contemplating to have the whole car dynamatted - boot, under the hood (dynaplate?), all doors and everything inside the cabin. I have some idea that is quite a bit of materials, maybe 2-3 bulk packs.

    However after reading quite a few threads in this forum, it seems that everyone here installs it on their own - not professional install. I cannot imagine the amount of electrics, mechanical items that need to be removed before the dynamat can go in - and also not restrict serviceable parts in the future.

    Is there anyone that can do this? What sort of manhours would I be looking at? Dollar amount for labour?

    90% of road noise these days comes from the tyres.
    You might investigate various quieter options compared to what you're running at the moment.

      I believe they are Continental tyres. Doesn't sound too promising of a brand though. Any recommendations?

        Continental AG are a good brand, they make the RNS510 units as well...

            The brand is irrelevant.Some models in good tyre brands are known to be noisy,the rest of the range not so.
            Can't help with specifics as I haven't tried everything.
            You could research the web and see if your specific Continental model has known issues.

                    yep, aftermarket exhaust, then u will have the annoying drone to listen to rather than tyre and road noise.
                    i dont have dynamat and im happy with the sound levels in the car. i admit, there is a patch of road that i drive along, with the stereo off, the road noise is extremely loud, ive had people comment on how loud the road noise is. kinda embarrassing, but on smooth roads, its great.
                    i deal with it

                      You don't want the car too quiet inside cause the rattles will drive you insane! I know mine do!!

                        hmmm 14500ks and i havent scored any rattles yet... hope i dont either lol. to OP.. and to be honest the golf is alot quieter than my VE SS ute was.

                          Mine rattled the day I drove it off the showroom floor.

                          OP.. It would cost you a pretty penny to get dynamat professional installed throughout the car. I wouldn't bother.

                              Agree with changing the tyres. Mine came with Bridgestone RE-050 tyres. Didn't realise how noisy they were until I changed to RE-002.

                              Modern cars already come with many kilograms of sound deadener so the Dynamat may not make a lot of difference in your situation. It is largely intended for older or stripped out cars where bulk is needed to dampen panel vibrations.

                              Dynapad may be a bit better in your situation but I doubt it.

                              It would be worth checking the doors and door seals are properly aligned. There is a fair sized gap in the door frame for the door and at speed the door is sucked out slightly, especially around the window. When my car was new the driver's door wasn't actually bolted up properly so at highway speeds, especially when it was humid or raining there was a god-awful wind noise being generated.

                              BTW, VW service departments usually carry a decent rubber lube that keeps the seal supple and helps it seal.
                              If you dig a hole and it is in the wrong place, digging it deeper isn't going to help.
