awd diesel models have been available in the european market for ages havent they? Doesnt sound like much of a stretch to add a body kit too.

oh dear, a lighter awd golf that has (let's say hypothetically) 400nm of torque, sitting right in the sweet spot of torque, in 3rd gear when coming out of MOST corners up on reefton spur....

lol. yeah. for anyone who thinks diesels are slow, come to melbourne... i know a couple of little diesels that will roast you in the hills. (but then, you probably dont have a ufcking clue how to drive, seeing as you honestly have not been around the scene/ meets/ driving with a decent mix of other members enough to have any idea that diesels might actually go half well).

i say bring it on. a 500nm (remapped) golf diesel will be a very, very, very nice thing. in fact, in the twisty stuff, i'd hazard a guess that a diesel golf R (with its massive bottom end) would have more of a chance than a petrol golf R at keeping up with a clio 200 (although the clio 200 would probably only take 3-4 corners to lose either golf R).

looks like diesel is the way to go now. even the SLK has a diesel model. but really, with the roof down, all you hear is a truck, how much fun is that? same thing with the R, would you really want to hear a truck when you give it some gas?

Slightly oft, but we went through a similar situation (choosing petrol or diesel) with our son, who was on his red Ps (NSW) and we settled on a near new low km Fiat Punto diesel (same price as the petrol version 2nd hand), yes its only a 1.3l, while only 66kw, its has 200nm of torque at 1750rpm, with a 6 speed gearbox. keep the car between 2000 and 3500 rpm and thing goes a lot harder than you would expect, but just 1 really negative point, sounds like a little truck and that's what ruins the car in the end, I don't like cars that sounds like trucks. Once while the fiat was being serviced the mechanic gave me a lift in the workshop Alfa Romeo 159 diesel, car went well, but the sound track totally destroyed the experience, Alfa's aren't supposed to sound like trucks. the same applies to electric cars whats the point of how fast they can go if there is no sound track.

Seeing for myself I agree. DOVW Saturday cruise surprised me just how zippy the diesels were. Scotty I was first surprised when following you. Thought I would have to lay off the loud pedal so I wouldn't get too close to you into and out of the corners. After a couple of bends realised I didn't have to, lol.

Anyways diesel advancements in racing has come in leaps and bounds and is only going to be a good thing for the likes of the maybe R diesel. If an R diesel does happen one day I don't think they'd just make it look fast.

Keep an ear out for a new GTD. They still sound a little clattery at idle, bit nothing like the PD ones, which really do sound like farm equipment. I have had a play with one, and I was amazed how it sounded under throttle, quite "un-diesel like ".

I've just changed my intake setup pre turbo, and I have to say it has changed the exhaust note quite considerably, and for the better, so much so I was amazed. It's no Alfa, but it's amazing what's possible.....

And Scotty don't be so defensive, let the petrol boys be, we don't want them all catching on now do we!

The mk6 GTD I drove at Sandown raceway sounded awesome at full throttle down the front straight. Was surprised how sporty an induction noise it had

My GTD is obviously a diesel at idle, but I don't find it intrusive (even if others do). And it doesn't sound truck-like under throttle - I think it has a nice growl.

I love the way that it pulls like a train - the only thing I don't like is that the low redline comes around way too quick. At least the DSG upshifts are real easy.

As a former Fabia vRS driver, I have a real love for diesels. An even better example of diesel done right is the 3.0 unit Audi use. Mind-bogglingly quick!

After all, aren't diesels cleaning up again at Le Mans.
