Just to update, fix went well and noise is gone. Whole steering rack replaced. No further details. Steering seems more precise now, perhaps the faulty part/s were contributing to some looseness.

I have noticed a similar noise on slow full lock with mine, yes it was raining but can't see why that is an issue. Car has done just 900klms. I will ask when it goes in for the 1,500 inspection.Mark FC

Odd sound when steering is at full lock
Hi folks, I had a quick look around and couldn't find another thread on this, so thought I'd ask before taking the car in to the dealers...
I have a MK6 Adidas that's done about 17,000km now and I've just noticed that when turning the car at full lock in either direction (while moving forward or backward) there is a mild grinding noise coming from the front end. I say grinding, but it's more like a ticking as it changes speed depending how quickly the car is moving. I have checked and there doesn't seem to be anything catching on the inner edge of the tyres on either side. It doesn't sound like the heavy clunking you get from worn out CV joins on older cars.
At a bit of a loss as to what could be causing this, and don't know if it has always been there or if it has just developed. I don't have much cause to turn the car at full lock in the course of everyday driving.
Thanks in advance....
Chris

I have just experienced the same issue with my GTI (3 years old, 23,000km), and I've never noticed it before. And yep, today it's pouring with rain!
I start to hear a grinding noise at about 1 full turn of lock, and it gets louder the more I turn the wheel; the noise is only present when the car is actually moving. Bizarre. I've had my 3-year service about a month back, and an end-of-warranty inspection at a specialist a week before that, both of which gave my car a clean bill of health, so it'd be bad luck if it was a mechanical failure now! But if all that's required is lubrication of a boot or similar, and if it only happens in the wet, then I'm slightly less concerned.
I'll listen carefully for the noise next time I take the car out in the dry, and update my post depending on the outcome.
EDIT: Since it's dried up, the grinding noise has indeed gone away.Last edited by AdamD; 25-07-2013, 07:23 PM.2008 MkV Volkswagen Golf R32 DSG
