Using my R as a family car when the kid arrives in March.

Both back seats (Left and right window not middle) have ISOFIX for a babyseat (Illegal in Oz but way safer than so called Australian standard car seats)
We can fit an 'Icandy pram' in the back easily plus shopping....
Tinted back windows further so I don't have to get sunblinds.

    Bingo, family car.....

Did the XR5 have a full sized spare with a built up floor? Maybe that's why you're saying you think the Golf's boot is deeper. If you, so may find the GTi OK since it has a space saver spare. Plus you will need less baby stuff as the kids grow older.

With the standard Focus and Golf, the Focus has a much longer boot while depth and width are about the same. Rear seat space is almost identical so 2 kiddie seats/boosters can fit in the back but as hooba said, no one else would fit in between.
The XR5 does have built up floor and temp spare (caused by the exhaust system). The UK had the option of a can of goo hence the comment from Top Gear as that increases the boot space (from about Golf R size to slightly larger than the GTI). XR5 floor is noticably higher than other Focus models.
