You need to take a drive in the country in pitch black to really expeirience the ambient red lighting

Seriously though, it actually adds a bit of ambient lighting (and lets you see the DSG/manual shifter when it's pitch black).

I love the red ambient lighting. It's quite subtle but a very nice touch on VW's part to add it in there.

its VW way of distracting their drivers using pretty lights....

but i think its there so you can see what buttons you're pushing up there. sunroof controls, map reading lights, etc

As mentioned before, it gently shines on the DSG shifter when its very dark.

talking about the map reading lights etc...has anyone found a way to 'illuminate' the switches like all the others around the car...?...

Except for the fact that they shine downwards, not up towards the roof-mounted switchgear... If VW really wanted to 'distract' the driver they would have made them white or any colour other than red. And if they were really distracting, they wouldn't have passed ADR.

Red lights are also good for night vision as they dont cause your iris to contract as much as any other lights
