  • golf 118tsi, few observations, are they normal???

Hi all, I’m not sure if I’ve posted this in the right section but here it goes,

My new Golf 118tsi is now a tad over 2 weeks old and i have made it past the magic 1,500km break in period..

I’ve just noticed a few little things and was wondering if you guys could let me know if they are normal before i go and annoy the dealer..

    1) Cold start, rough and missing at idle until warm, read somewhere that it is normal.

    2) Once the engine is warm, I’ve notice when stopped at traffic lights etc., with no radio or climate on, and windows closed the engine makes a tapping sound, not overly loud but i can hear it, i don’t remember hearing that before.

    3) brakes, this is going to be hard to explain, they are kind of loud when you are coming to a stop, like they are sliding on the disc, I never had this with any other car I've had (jap)

    4) lastly, engine tends to be a bit rough on take off in first gear (manual) until the supercharger fires up, could be that this car requires more gas when taking off?

Thank you in advance, I’m not nit picking by the way, I’m loving my car, It’s yet to use any oil, it’s great on fuel and i love the power... ...... it is just very different than the Japanese cars i have owned in the past and want to make sure things are okay, saves me going to the dealer and being told it’s all normal..

    Thanks.

For Point 2 - the tapping noise is the Climate Control (probably thermostat) working in the background. It runs even though you have it "turned off" at the controls. It is normal for Golfs with Climatic control. It is louder in some cars than others.

      1) More then likely to be normal

      2) answered above

      3) Would suggest to get them checked out, more then likely glazing on the discs.

4)Don't really understand what your trying to say here as the supercharger should work when accelerator aggressively pushed on or similar load. It will cut out at 3500rpm.

it doesn't sound like the climate control, the sound is coming from the engine, like tappet noise, its not very loud but i don’t remember hearing it at all for the first 2 weeks.

As for question 4, my understanding is the supercharger jumps in around 1700 rpm, so I’m referring to taking off slowly, not revving the engine past 1200 1300rpm.

Point 1 - this is normal. mine has done it from new.

Point 2 - could be the injectors your hearing. But sitting in the cabin i wouldn't think you'd hear them.

Point 4 - supercharger engages as soon as you start giving it throttle. You should hear a click noise as it engages. As for the roughness on take off, get it looked at.

The problem with trying to describe sounds over the interwebs, is just like trying to describe shades of a colour, even uses slightly different terms. If you're in doubt, visit your dealer. The sound very well could be the climate control as you've described it, but it could be something else...

Your understanding of the supercharger is not correct.
To quote VAG's self study guide. "From a minimum torque requirement and up to an engine speed of 2,400 rpm, the supercharger is constantly activated." Above that and up to 3,500rpm, it's activated as required. So in other words, it does just "jump in". But again, descriptive words can vary from person to person.

              1) My 118TSI has done 29000km and I did think it was a tad louder than normal from a very cold start but that quickly disappears.
              2) Can't say I've heard anything like that
              3) I've noticed this too on my car. Especially when I'm reversing slowly and go to brake a tad harder than I should, it makes a sound like it's grinding. The car have just been serviced and I haven't noticed it again though.
              4) Mine's DSG but I don't know if the sluggish-ness I'm noticing is the throttle lag? (Sorry I'm new to car so I don't know if I'm talking poo poo )

                1)
Mine misfired and farted, but apparently there's a software update that has cured it, though it still does it. (Just got it back from service and having cluytch packs replaced!)

                4) DEFINE ROUGH!

Mine just ticked over 2,000km, but 2 months old now.

Mine does this. Sort of a "burble" or missing when cold. Only noticed it recently, but then it's only gotten cold recently.

This could just be the nature of the direct inject TSI engine. To me they sound like a quiet diesel. Can't say I have noticed anything overly out of the ordinary though.

Brakes I have never had an issue with, except for being very touchy. In the first few days I took the car out onto the freeway late and night and did 3-4 firm but controlled fast braking from 100km/h down to about 60km/h. Seemed to take the edge of them at the time and have had nice braking ever since.

I would say this is normal for DSG, but you don't have DSG. Can't help you here. All I know is DSG doesn't like slow stop start traffic.

Yeah my 77TSI is like this, it doesn't really bother me too much.

I'm starting to get a similar sounding problem as the rough take off - mine is DSG though.
Never noticed it until a few weeks ago and I mentioned it at my 15k service.. they have reset the DSG (from what I was told) but it seems to still do it.
Sort of shuddering - a feeling like the car is trying to take off without having the revs up and is going to stall, followed by no power and then finally it takes off. Its not a constent thing though, over the past 10 days would say it has happened twice.

Actually based on what I've seen on VCDS if you're cruising along at under 2400 revs on the freeway with light throttle, the supercharger does end up disengaging. On my vehicle you can hear the faint 'chirp' sound when the clutch for the compressor enages if you prod the accelerator. I have to be driving with radio off on a smooth road to hear it.
