  • When Does YOUR Warranty Begin ?

Bought my Golf from Wangara on 3rd of June. It was a showroom model with 20km on it.

Today I called VW Australia to find out my customer info/Roadside assist and whereabouts of my "welcome pack" .

Apparently, the car is still registered under VW Wangara's name on VWA's system (almost 7 weeks since purchase)... even though I paid in full and picked it up on the day. Furthermore, the warranty has already began on 31 January 2011 and not on the day I drove the car off the lot (WTF?)... Needless to say, no one told me that my warranty has already been active for over 4 month...

VWA told me that the dealership can adjust the warranty date. I called my dealership and guess what... "we'll call you back..."

Has anyone had any similar issues with the dealership?

That's not right! Your warranty starts on the day the car is delivered to the new owner!
If they started your warranty early you should first talk to the dealer about it or write a letter to Volkswagen Australia, if that fails you send your complaint into a current affair program.. That will get there attention!
I had my mates Golf V TSI replaced with a new car because it was nine months old and had spent eight months in the volkswagen work shop and hey couldn't fix it!

Spoke to VW Wangara and they said they're not going to do anything about it, warranty began on January 31 and that's it.
I was wondering why no one told me that when I purchased the car? How am I suppose to know that the vehicle was already registered for 4 month and that warranty already began? It was my first new car purchase, so I had no idea that this was an issue...

          Hi there,

I had a similar probelm when I bought my car new from VW Osborne Park.

This is the wording from VWA website.

"Your vehicle warranty cover commences from the first day the vehicle is registered or on the date its original owner first uses the vehicle"

A good indication of your warranty start is the same date as your rego, you appear to have purchased a "demo" model there fore when ever it was first registered is the warranty start.

              dieterbohlen,

If you bought a registered car then what "Flipper Dog" is saying applies on you. But if you are the first owner and it was first registered under your name then the warranty should start on day you drive out of the dealership - if this is the case and you are not satisfied with the response form your dealer, you should contact Consumer Affairs. See what they have to say!
You can also write a letter to VGA.
Or call your dealer and tell them that you are going to talk to consumer affairs - this might just help you!
              Good luck!

Yeah, it really comes down to when your car was registered. If you bought a car that had already been registered for 4 months, then you should have really asked more questions, despite it only having 20km on it. If it was first registered to you, then I'd be escalating. Call the dealership principle and discuss it with them. Convey to them what VGA told you about the dealer being able to update the information. If you get no joy, then try consumer affairs etc. But first double check on your contracts to see there is any comment about the warranty on that. If there is a statement such as "warranty commences from contract date etc, then they'll have to adjust it.

When I got the car it was in the showroom on display (no plates attached). I paid for the car, waited around for about 2 hours for them to get it ready to go and when I came back car was washed, cleaned and number plated were attached. Sales guy printed out receipt with "Department of Transport" logo that was titled "Motor Vehicle Licence and Third Party Insurance Policy". It was issued onto my name, therefore, I thought I was the first owner, however VWA today told me that it's still registered under "VW Wangara"; Wangara said that they sent off all documents within 7 days and it's Department of Transport's problem now.

Did you talk to your dealer about the first owner/registration date? Ask them, when was it first registered.

In my view, they should have informed you but probably they did not!

As "Corey" said, talk to the Dealer Principle and tell him what happened.

                    Cheers,

Hmmm... I guess that's one of the negatives of WA doing away with the registration sticker! Have you got the registration papers to say when it was registered? Can you log into the WA Department of Transport to determine when it was registered? That's what you need to find out. The day that was done, is when your warranty starts (unless there is something else in your contract).

I did talk to the dealer and they told me that the car was a "demo", registered 31 of Jan, I got it cheaper than retail, be happy and piss off basically...

Well, the rego is paid until 2 December 2011, which is exactly 6 month since 3 June when I purchased the car.

You still can talk to dealer principle (DP) and see what he/she has to say!
Once you talk to the DP and not satisfied, no harm calling/consulting consumer affairs.

                            Cheers,

Even that seems strange. If the car had either 6 or 12 month registration, it should be till 31 Jan should it not?

What about the service sticker - when do they say it should be serviced next - it should be 31 Jan too?

You have bought a demo model, but it would seem as if no-one advised it was a demo model. Probably not much of a leg to stand on, but the DP needs to be informed and maybe you can get a free service or something...
