The button is self contained in the knob (I assume it activates a microswitch). From what I've read the knob is a press fit onto the shaft using a special crimped clamp.

I love the "golf ball" changer in my new Adidas. It fits in the hand much better than the "old" unit I had in my previous GT, and looks cooler than the standard GTI one (IMO)

Bit more research indicates that this mod isn't possible on the TSI/TDI models due to the plastic pin at the top of the shift lever only working with side mounted release buttons rather than the front type as on the new knob. Some brave people have heated the pin and twisted it 90 degrees but not worth the risk IMO
