  • Faint "miss" at idle?

Recently my car appears to have developed a very faint intermittent miss or cough at idle.

It is very faint, if the GTI engine wasn't so smooth or if the radio volume was up I wouldn't notice it. The tachometer needle doesn't register it, and the car runs well (even better with this cold weather we're having). It just seems to stutter at idle, like one of the cylinders isn't firing cleanly.

Anybody else experience this? Any thoughts?

That's what I'd imagine it would be like, I figure that what I'm feeling is the engine movement like what you see in the video.

Occurs on rare occasions when very cold in the morning, I just let it sit for a tad longer until it stabalizes before pulling away.

I've had slight hesitation/shudder at idle....only started since I filled my GTI with Shell V Power. I've used all other fuels on the market, this was the last fuel to buy as part of my 'fuel experiment'.

Not sure what is so different about V Power by my GTI doesn't like it.

Looking forward to an empty tank and for me to solely using Mobil 8000.

I usually only use V-Power, but due to necessity (was out in the country) had to put some BP Ultimate in the other week, which ran very well. So I went back for seconds (closer to home), and (as on past occasions) the car was the most sluggish it had ever been. Once I got down to half a tank I filled with V Power again, and it ran great again.

My personal experience is (with my current and previous car):
                  Mixing fuels = best result
Only V Power = still pretty good
Only BP Ultimate = Sluggish, not very responsive

I understand others have great results with BP, so I'm guessing it's something to do with the particular BP stations around where I live.

On mixing fuels, If I run Vpower one tank and fill the next with 95, I get about 100kms more milage than on either plain fuels!

I've had the same experience with BP Ultimate. It makes the car run ****ing awful.

My 118tsi is only a few days old and is doing the same on cold start up, was there ever a fix, or considered normal?

Those youtube vids aren't faulty 118TSi engines on cold start. Thats the quick warm up routine caused by the valve timing being adjusted by the engine ECU to similuate an EGR valve effect. The cams have a variable adjustment on the 118TSi. By adjustment when cold, more exhaust gas remains in the cylinders. That results in a quicker warm-up to cut engine emissions. The warmer the day, the shorter it lasts on cold start. Warmed up engine on start won't do it.

Slight misfire problem...... VW are being supplied with over gapped spark plugs at the factory and spares are the same. Pull the plugs and regap to the Maintnenance Manual. I think (without an engine code) the gap spec is 1.0mm - 1.1mm on the GTi engine. (39 thou - 43 thou). Set them to 1.0mm / 39 thou. Torque is 25Nm.
