Pretty much the R was the perfect drive when I first ordered and recieved it but now that the roads have been hammered up here its not so flash outside of Cairns. As for having 18's as opposed to 19's....your kidding yourself if you think that is going to save you on a dirt road. There are heaps of us in the same problem at the moment up here. One of the blokes commodores with just plain old stock rims goes in this weekend to have two rims replaced because of the same problem!

Just to clarify when I say pothole..insert....something similar in size to the hole in the movie 300.....or in fact just the entire road washed away or a patch that has sunk that still looks fine from 20 meters away but as you hit it at 80km/h you realise that its actually a 10cm deviation in road height

Did around 6000ks last year from Brisi to the gulf and back in 3 weeks last year on the standard 16 inch (55 profile) rims and tyres on the TSI via western Qld roads. Lots of big drop-offs and holes, never a problem. Fitted 19 inch BBS replicas (35 profile) in November and no problems around the (semi) smooth roads of SE Qld. Just did a 1000k round trip to Bundaberg last week and on the way home when I got to the freeway, could definitely feel some rear wheel vibrations thru my a*se. The Pacific highway north of Sunshine Coast is a joke. You just cant dodge the big holes and ridges. I fear I may too have suffered some rim buckling on this trip. Maybe the Federal Gov can supplement the cost of repairs?

On that last point does everyone know that you can put a complaint into Main Roads to have the matter investigated?

I've known people who have damaged their car in a pothole to go back, take photos of the approach, then a close up photo or two fo the pothole. Make sure you also take a ruler etc that you can stick into the hole to demonstrate it's depth and length/width etc. You then contact the local council or state or federal body (whoever is responsible for that road).

I had an issue in December\January in Brisbane. I rang BCC and reported a pothole (deep one ~5-8cm deep, 30-40cm dia) right in the middle of an intersection I go through every work day. I kept the reference number etc. and it was (kind of) fixed until the next rain only few days after. I managed to drive into it in the dark and it damaged my front right rim (Black 19"). Needless to say I was somewhat p****d at the situation.

Anyways, I called this guy Alloy Doctor - Home he offered a great service for only $110.

I rang the council back with the invoice and (like the grumpy old bastard I am) sent them letter quoting the reference number etc.

Long story, short, they coughed up $110 for the repair as it was in some time window that they guaranteed decent road repairs.

I think I was pretty lucky as about a week afterwards Brisbane went through its flood-ageddon and so many roads are very badly damaged still.

I thought I drove a lot of km's in my GTI, but it seems like you guys put me to shame. In my few months of ownership, I have driven Gold Coast to Mount Isa return twice (my record 18.5 hours one way for 1871km), Brisbane to Cairns return and Mount Isa to Cairns return. I hit 3 birds and 2 kangaroos which cost me $230 in dent repairs. I don't feel so bad now reading that you need 4 new rims. In my opinion Mackay has the worst roads in QLD!!

                          Why a Golf R?

So went to another tyre place here in cairns, one where I've put a lot of work through and turns out that hte second opinion is much better than the first. 1 wheel has two bad buckles, currently being sent off to look at, 2 are not so bad and can be balanced out and 1 is perfect.....amazing the difference a second opinion makes...and also turns out the initial bloke that fitted the tyre did something wrong with the beading? and it wasn't sitting properly hence a bit of a wobble (I assume someone in the tyre game knows what they're referring to)
