Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • golf r and golf gti- interchangeable parts

couldnt really find a thread on this, but what parts would be direct bolt ins from the golf r to the golf gti?
the golf r brakes (front rotors) are slightly larger than the gti, and the calipers have the R logo, but are the calipers actually different?. not sure on the rear setup
the interior seats of the r would bolt in as well i assume.
    anything else?

    Almost everything dude...

    They're the same car.

The Golf R front brakes are massively larger than the GTI brakes. The calipers are completely different to account for that large change. The rear brakes are also significantly larger.
Of course the seats would be swapable. In fact, the standard cloth and the leather seats are the identical design, only differences in materials and logos.

The engines are different, and so you need to be sure that anything which is designed for one engine but not the other is identified. Obviously there is also the AWD vs FWD and considerations for that.

I assumed they would be. Good to know for future projects

Alot of the mechanicals (also interior parts exc dash components) are also interchangeable with the MKV GTI's as the Golf R runs essentially the same engine/gearbox, turbo (pirelli edition) & chassis. Easiest way to make sure is by cross referencing part numbers.

Could there be potential for brake upgrades using OEM R parts for GTIs ?

If the MKV is anything to go by where they upgraded the Gti's with the R32 brakes then there is no reason as to why you couldn't do the same with the MKVI's as they are essentially the same chassis. You could also potentially use brakes from the R36 and Passat CC as they also run a single piston, 345mm disk brake. A quick cross reference of part numbers would determine if the parts are the same as the Golf R.

***Correction - Part No. may be different dut to colours, logo's etc although parts may still be interchangeable.***
