  • Carbon Buildup..

What do you guys feel about this? I have APR 2+ GTI that's about to go in for a 60k service and also will fit in a BSH race catch can. Do you think its necessary for a full upper engine clean. I know you can use a spray can upper engine cleaner but im not sure if it will clean the hard deposits of carbon.

I would clean the intake system every 15,000km on TSI engine. At 60,000km you will not be able to remove all the deposit. Catch can or Provent is a good idea.

Seb in Girraween does full strip down engine cleans. Apparently the only way to make sure all the gunk is removed.

WURTH Intake system cleaner - it could be harder to get, you will need to find the WURTH distributor. I could help you, if you were in Adelaide.

Motorcrfat R16 - from Ford dealer or Motortraders.
Amsoil Powerfoam (similar to Motorcraft R16) from Amsoil dealer in your state.

Thanks Transporter, I will have a look and see what I can find.

Are these just a spray type cleaner?

Just trying to figure out if it will be an easy job every 15k, or if it will require some downtime.

Any reason for those over something more readily available like the Subaru branded 'Upper Engine Cleaner' product?

Will these spray can upper engine cleaners actually work with hardened deposits of carbon ?

Subaru upper engine cleaner is the same as Ford Motorcraft R16, both made by Bars Leaks. Ford will be cheaper and if you could get Amsoil PowerFoam you get more product for less.

I have good results with WURTH and Ford R16. WURTH comes with long plastic tube that you can get very close to the inlet valves in some engines.

                      What about the air inlet?

Any picture or diagram to show where exactly to spray?

Cheers mate! I've been using the Subaru stuff for years and just wanted your input on if there was a better product out there to use. Sounds like sticking with the Subaru stuff is fine.
