Just wanted to clarify that I love the sound. Just needed confirmation it was normal as the car had been clinically silent upto today! My evo and wrx were both noisy and full of character so new sounds were nothing out of the ordinary... and I HATE rotaries! That blasted wanky sound drives me to distraction!

I'm no expert either but I'm sure it doesn't do the DSG any good when your rolling down a hill @ 80km then pop back into D again... but more to the point, why would you WANT to do it?

I've never understood the purpose of N in auto's???

I love the noise. What exactly causes it and why?

That's the 2nd post I've seen today of people talking about coasting in N !
LOL it was also me commenting about rolling in N before I used to do it when I was driving a conventional auto thinking that it would be more efficient as rolling in D would always slow the car down, guess I shouldn't do that anymore

Rolling in N in the DSG is specifically warned about in the owners manual (I'm recalling from my memory here) because the engine isn't driving the oil pumps at the load required and it can cause overheating of the DSG gearbox.
In addition, switching to N actually increases fuel consumption as the car needs to supply fuel to the motor to keep it idling, whereas if the car is in D (or S or M), the motion of the wheels back through the drivetrain to the engine is enough to keep the engine ticking over without any fuel being used. With the Golf R, I have observed that any minimum revs which any gear is capable of whilst in D is enough to turn the engine over without fuel. (In my manual Polo GTI, you needed to keep the revs over ~1500, but in the R, even at 1200 rpm its fine... any lower and the DSG changes down anyway!).

I'm happy to be correct by anyone more mechanical, but I believe that it's as has been mentioned previously, the operation of the diverter valve. When you take your foot off the accelerator, some of the flow which would usually go through the turbo gets routed through the diverter valve to cut boost (and prevent overrun?).

Hehe! It's one of the aural pleasures of Stage I cars! It's funny how simply having a "software change" can cause so many different mechnical sounds - but it happens! My previous Polo GTI and MKV Golf GTI also featured similar noises (though at lower RPMs due to their smaller turbos!)

I get the mad fluttering when the car is under load, and I love it!

I need to find a way to make it louder. The sort of loud that'd get people thinking "Yo dawg, did that just come from a Jetta?"

No mechanic here but always thought it was to prevent compressor surge and recirculating types used to prevent idling issues with MAF equipped cars? The noise of externally venting bovs gets farken annoying quick anyways!

This flutter is easy to do on my rotor (very loud!) and my old skyline (loudish) and on my Mk5 GTI (soft but audible).
Go WOT in say 3rd gear from low down (say 1400rpm), and just as it starts to build boost take your foot off quickly.
I always put it down to the turbo spooling up (compressor building up rpms) but when the throttle is snapped shut it is not making enough boost to open the BOV completely or any at all. In this case the airflow stops, but the compressor is still spinning, essentially chopping the air as it has nowhere to go.
