    Further update:

Turns out it wasn't the throttle system at all. It seems a bolt has worked itself loose (suspected from the trim) and has entered the turbo unit, rendering the turbo rooted. VW are currently assessing what steps need to be taken now.

It now seems likely I will be without my car for a number of weeks, which is now becoming very frustrating. I am looking to take this up with VW - just need to find a way to contact customer service (through VW assist, is that right?).

On the plus side, my loan van has been upgraded to a Jetta TDI. Can't seem to find the enthusiasm to really see this as the plus side right now though.

I know ranting and raving won't get you far, but might be time to show them your level of frustration. On a positive note, the boot is getting smaller. Good luck with it, I hope it turns out OK.

I have lodged a complaint with VW Customer Service, let's see what that does. They said someone would call me back within 48 hours. I'm certainly not holding my breath.

For anyone that needs it (because it is not easy to find), the VW customer service number is: (03) 8792 4212.

          Further update

Further update to my Golf R woes:

VW identified traces of metal in the oil, indicating that when the turbo blew it has caused further damage through the engine. Therefore they are now replacing the entire engine assembly.

ETA is approximately 2 weeks due to the time it will take to get the engine in and then fit it.

I just hope it'll be back to normal once done.

VW Customer Service has acknowledged my complaint and are gathering the technical information around the fault.

The good news is that this didn't happen out side of warranty! You need to establish some priorities to discuss with VW when they ring. NO point saying my car broke and its only a couple weeks old what are you going to do about it because honestly they seem to have done a sterling job already.

I remember when my Evo clapped out, it was off road for a couple weeks and I was on the foot the whole time! Don't get me wrong, it sounds like a royal pain in the ass but at least you've still got transport and no financial outlay. By winding them up will just give them more reason to find a user related fault to smoke you with!!!

I agree with you Angryman, the VW dealer I was towed to is doing an excellent job, and have kindly provided me with a loan car so I could not expect anymore from them.

I just wanted to lodge it with VW to ensure they continue to prioritise this as much as possible.

Angryman, the guy didn't say he got stuck into them. For him to be getting this level of service, he must be being reasonable at this point.

And why wouldn't you say "my car broke down after a couple weeks - and I have the ****s". It did. Just don't go on about it.

Anyways, good to see they are dealing with it and giving you a loan car and NEW motor!!

Who was the other guy who waited a month just for an ECU to come over!?

I'd say orkers is doing good.

                  New Engine Question

This may be a silly question, but how can I be sure that VW will fit the correct engine to my R?

I have no reason to doubt this for a second, but I'm obviously keen to ensure that the car I get back is the car I paid for. So, the questions I have are:

                  a) is it even technically possible for them to put in an incorrect engine (for example the GTI engine)?

                  b) If the answer is yes to the above, is there an easy way to check I have the correct one?

                  Probably stupid questions but.....

Rest assured, you'll get the right engine. Aside from the appearance, mount points, ancillaries etc etc all ensuring it'd be immediately obvious if something was amiss, the process will be driven by specific part numbers, which will ensure that what's ordered is supplied. You'd be concerned if your dealer's VW techs weren't able to tell the right parts from the wrong ones in this case.

Given the extensive differences between the drivelines and electronic components of the R and GTI, I'm guessing a GTI ECU would probably not be able to run a car with an R AWD system... the two models do use different physical ECUs, aside from the coding differences.

And after all that... I would expect there'd be physical complications - to say the least - involved in swapping the R's EA113 for something (anything) else, but I'm just guessing here.

It will be a blessing in disguise if you did get the EA113 engine instead of the EA888 - but I'd say it would be neigh impossible that a mix up of this sort would occur.
