You are joking surely? My 90TSI has used 4L in 17,000km while my Forester has used none in 209,000km. I have a number of friends with Subarus - including one with over 500,000km - and none have had any trouble with oil consumption. Another friend with an 07 TDI regularly has to top her's up.

    • Then you don't have friends that have had their Subie's engine replaced due to oil consumption.. it is/was a known issue and why the warning stickers inside the cabin requesting you constantly check your oil and in the boot you were supplied with a carefully packaged oil holder.

Don't get me wrong, my Subaru 2.0R Liberty is very dear to me and hasn't used a drop but the history of the 2.5 litre engines is not a good one.

Well there were certainly none of those things with mine or anyone else's that I know. You just have to talk to the VW/Subaru service centre mechanics where I get both my cars serviced to know which of the two makes has the most problems, and it isn't Subaru. Early 2.5 non-turbo engines had a head gasket problems but not the turbo versions with their closed deck blocks. Both Subaru and VW are proud of their reputations of delivering long term durability (like Toyota also claims) and have earned their reputations in the market place. When you think what VW had to recover from with their first generation of water cooled Golfs and Passats in the late '70's it's quite remarkable.

... and please don't say "reasonable time frame"
I can't give you any time frame. But look at the date when the OP was talking to the dealer and the date of the first post. It took only 5 days from happiness to threats with ACCC and lawyers. I can hear some of you saying, “He didn’t threaten anyone yet”; well he did, and publicly in the open forum, which doesn’t help his situation.

To others who just fuel the OP’s frustrations with the negative comments, encouraging to take a legal action and talking tough, while hiding behind the computer screens: Bear in mind that he is the one to deal with the dealer face to face.

To the OP: you just had a bad luck that doesn’t know the holidays
As many people here already said, give the dealer chance to repair it. If the fault is unusual, didn't happen before anywhere, it may take longer to trace it and they don’t want to give you the car back with the partial fix. Pushing it hard will NOT speed up the repair.

I sincerely hope that you get your car back soon.

          Merry Christmas to all.

No need to sell me on Subaru, 5 years of trouble free motoring for me, would have lined up for the Gen V had it not been such a hideous design .. As a AWD fan you are limited in what is on offer, the Golf R ticks all the boxes, here is hoping for a good one.. )

Subaru are a damn fine vehicle, just now owned by Toyota they are getting whacked pretty hard with the ugly stick.. the New Liberty is definitely a Camry on Steroids. I believe the new Sports coupe coming out from Toyota has the Boxer engine.. where will this sinful marriage end...

                  .....
                  Hi Transporter,

my question was not about particular case, threats with ACCC and lawyers (but I can understand people reacting like that because if, for some reason, after you arrange payment and take possession of the car, part of your payment is canceled (cheque bounced back) do you have 3 attempts and few months time to fix it without any penalties (interest charged on outstanding amount...)

When I asked VWA (when having trouble with my 118TSI) about 3 attempts and time frame to fix my 118TSI - no answer,
when I asked them - does it mean that I can be without car more than 3 months - only answer was "VWA is not providing curtsy car"
it is dealers goodwill (thank You VW Wangara)

It is not only VW, I have similar experience with Toyota.

It took me more than 3 months that Toyota OP "recognise" that rear wheals on my Corolla are not alginate (despite readings from 3 professional alignment experts showing problem) Finally I was told that it can't be repaired in WA (should be taken to Eastern States for few months) and no reimbursement for 3 sets of tires and alignment expenses and my wasted time.

                  Back to the topic,

I don't think it is dealers fault - they are following VWA instructions (and I am sure that instructions are in line wit our law) - Yes we need "lemon law"

Yes I agree that You should aim to "work with dealer" to find solution BUT

Common people, it was broken on the FIRST DAY... FIRST DAY - he is having every right to be disappointed (angry) and demand new car or refund or at least compensation not from dealer but from VWA ... what about that case when "extended warranty claim was rejected on the first date"

and as somebody mentioned OP should be given new car and his car should be repaired & used as demo.

                  p.s.
Don't be harsh on my English.

                  • Here's a question for those demanding a refund/new car.

If you buy a project home, in a new estate, and there was, say, incorrect sealing in the bathroom, as does happen, which causes damage and needs repair because of leaking through wiring, would you demand a brand new house? Or would you let the builder repair the damage?

A warranty does not equal I get a new one if something doesn't work. It means that the manufacturer has to rectify the issue.

... and you can't move in that house for the next 2 years (relative to house and car life) and You are paying mortgage (interest) - on that house , water rates, council rates and they are still not able to fix it ...

and after You move in and if there is a problem... You have to move out rent other house why they are fixing yours without any compensation.......... but You are happy to do it.

and not to mentioned that house value s going up and car value down.

if You compare it You should take into account all relevant factors...

                      • well housing is very different to consumer goods in terms of warranty/ refunds/returns. they have completely different legislation and regulations that protect the buyer and seller.
motor vehicles also differ to most consumer goods.
dont get me wrong, this is a ****ty situation thats happening, no one ever wants a car that doesnt work properly especially when new, but its life and it happens, sometimes.
an example, a guy i knew got rear-ended, had a audi rs4, some $60k worth of damage, insurance didnt write it off as the car was ~$170k brand new, plus the originalquote was about $40k but it blew out. insurance covered it. the point is, the car was off the road for almost 7 weeks as parts had to be flown in from germany and what not. thats almost 2 months that he didnt use the car, plus he only got rental for 2weeks, and he paid lease of about $1700 a month, pretty ****ty

I reckon the sinful marriage might end if VW stops sleeping with Audi, Porshe just to get the upper hand on Toyota.

                            • VW & Audi have been sleeping together since 1972, Porsche & VW are the same blood line in any case.
