VW don't specify a viscosity rating in their oil specs. It's just pure coincidence that all 504/507 spec oils are 5w-30. It is theoretically possible that a 504/507 spec oil can be 5w-40 (or any other combo of numbers) it's just that nobody has bothered to market it yet.

It's also possible & within warranty guidelines to use 5w-40 502.00 (which is available in several grades) on petrol engines & still retain warranty as VW list this in the owners manual as an acceptable lubricant.

    • Hi all.

My 2012 GTI is using up to 1L oil per 1000km. It is still young- only done 6800km. VW are doing an oil consumption test. Any idea what they will do if it fails? Should compression also be tested?

I bought the car second-hand (with 2200km on the clock) Could the previous owner have stuffed up the engine in such a short time?

Just a little worried. Any advice appreciated.

      • My R has already used 1L @ 6,000 KM

        • My mk6 gti barely use any oil under normal driving conditions on public roads, now at 28000km. On legal race tracks it is different story as u do push it hard.

I did my best to stick with the vw owner manual during the first 1500km running in period. But i am sure others have different opinions which have been discussed to death here.

Also, i rarely push it hard when the oil temp is still under 85 degrees.

1L per 6000km when new is nothing.... the 1L per 1000km that I'm using is a little more significant

            • I think VW has shares in a few oil companies....lol. Until I bought my first VAG this year I had never had a car that used oil at all during my 23 years of motoring so far. In 5 months now I would say I have used close to 3 litres in a new car still under10kms.

              • Help - Topping up engine oil?

On Friday I started my GTI for a short drive and for a few seconds I saw a yellow engine oil indicator, but this quickly disappeared by the time I pulled out

Today I drove ~30km on the M5 and about halfway the same indicator came back on but again disappeared after a few minutes.

I'm not sure whats going on but I don't like it.

My car is due for its 2nd year service in a couple of weeks but I'm surprised i'm getting these indicators given I've done < 10,000km since my last service.

Thing is i'm not sure what to do now.

I was going to drive it for a service at exoticars saturday week but now I'm worried that there might be an issue with the engine so thinking about rebooking for chatswood classic.

I'm guessing I should top up oil before driving again as a short term fix?

                Any advice/thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

Bit annoyed at the moment because I have no idea where to buy engine oil in Sydney CBD.

                  • Any Supercheap Auto store will have what you're after.

Easiest to get hold of, would be Penrite Enviro+ 5W30.

Don't they teach drivers to check the dipstick at least occasionally any more?

Every engine uses oil — it's just that some use more than others. Not checking for months on end is playing with fire.

My first car almost used more oil than petrol and had to be topped up daily — but then it was made in 1923...

And yes, Supercheap will have a suitable oil.

                      • Just to give you an update on what's happened with my car. As suspected, the engine oil consumption continued to get deteriorate over the last six months (since my last post). The consumption increased to about a litre of engine oil per 1200km (yes you read that correctly). With the vehicle being less than 3 years old and having approximately 100k km on it VW technical were concerned.

Long story short, after all the rubbish and time-consuming procedures and being treated like a criminal, they ended up pulling the engine out, stripping it completely, measuring the cylinder bore where they found that one cylinder was tapered and out of spec.

Currently in the process of shipping over a new long motor and replacing my existing engine under warranty.

A FYI for anyone that was interested.

                            • A new engine required for a car less than 3 years old and only travelled 100 000 km is quite poor by today's standards.

I find it somewhat ironic at the relief we all express towards the engine - which failed so quickly relative to its expected lifespan, that there was enough time for it to be covered by the factory warranty, saving you from a ruinous repair bill.

I'm sure you'll laugh it off one day!

Was buggered from Day1 I'd think.

The relief is that VW finally came to the party. Kudos to the owner for persisting rather than jumping ship.
