Although I also personally recommend using 504/507 oils for any direct-injection petrol engine, it isn't compulsory unless the vehicle is on the LongLife service regime - which should not be the case for any Australian delivered VW.

Basically what we are trying to say is stick to VW APPROVED OILS of the correct type and you wont have any troubles with warranty.

Use something else and it may well come back to bite you for the sake of $25 an oil change.

I have posted a link to an extensive list of approved oils.

They are listed both under types and separately alphabetically

Incorrect. Suggest you read your owners / service manual.

            Perhaps you actually meant this

Use any non approved VW502/505 or VW 504/507 at your own risk

            Meaning ONLY USE APPROVED OILS

You don't get it do you?

There are approved 504/507 oils & there are others that meet the standard but haven't been submitted for approval.

There are also approved 502/505 oils & others that meet the standard but have not been approved by VW.

In the case of petrol engines, on 15,000km service schedule you can use 502.00 or 504.00. It's in your owners/service manual.

Damn my car is at 24,500KM and the engine oil light just came on. Turned engine off, waiting 45 minutes, started engine and warning is gone. Going to check oil level when the engine is cold tomorrow.

Its never come on before, last service done was December 2012 - included an oil change.

Car is 2 years 3 months old, at 24,500km surely it cannot be still breaking in.

I've got myself a 4 month old 2012 Golf GTI DSG, with only 9,000km under her belt (bought brand new 22km). This weekend I got a low oil light and just wondering if this is something I should expect. I did check the engine and indeed I do have low oil (section C if you go buy the service manual). I know that VW have their first scheduled service at 15k so I would think there would have been enough oil to get me to this for a new car.

So I guess do I have wrong expectations or should be calling my service centre.

Well I check mine once a week I would NEVER leave a car for even 2000k and not check the oil.

When driving heavy vehicles we checked the oil and water EVERY MORNING.

Its only about a bit over a litre between full and low so it sounds like you need to buy a top up bottle

Thanks Hillbilly! Is there a particular oil brand people recommend here. I looked for the VW recommended castrol edge professional long life III 5w-30 but it isn't stocked anywhere, seems like only available through the service centre. I was told pennzoil is a good alternative, but I'm unsure.

                                **EDIT**
Just saw on the castrol website they do say to use Castrol Edge titanium Engine Oil - 5W-30 A3/B4 as a top up only so perhaps I should just use what the recommend.
