Volkswagen announces Golf Cabrio production spring 2011


Volkswagen have announced the re-introduction of the Golf Cabrio. No word on when or if we'll get it in Australia.

There are a lot of (what I believe to be ignorant) comments in the article above about what's the point of this when there is the EOS (and vice versa), but to me the EOS is a more "premium" hard top coupe, whereas this will be like the previous Golf Cabrio's, barely more than the regular Golf prices and with a Fabric roof. Makes sense to me

What do people think?

I agree. There's certainly a market for both the EOS and Golf Cabrio. They're two different machines aimed at different markets.

I think the Audi A3 convertible would have more appeal than this...

The MK4 Golf Cabrio made sense, it looked good with its boxy shape... Rounded off MKVI looks wrong as a convertible and seems downright cheap like a Mitsubishi Colt convertible... Need I say more!

I agree with this statement.
However most hatches look terrible in their convertible form (including the new A3)


Convertibles should be left to the sleek looking cars (z4, Mx5 etc rather than just making a ragtop roof for a hatch (i.e. corolla etc)

The Eos is moving upmarket and will become more of a Passat convertible from the next generation, rather than being obviously Golf-based. So the market overlap between Golf Cabrio and Eos will diminish quickly.

The only thing about the above that disappoints me is that the Eos - which I consider to be outstanding value and a class leader right now - will potentially become less of a good thing at a great price.

I'm sure there's a market for a cheaper Golf convertible though - especially in the US! I would, however, choose not to drive it.

+1. Totally agree.

Just wondering, with VW trying to stick it's nose in every single corner (vehicle category) of the car market trying to attract non-VW customers, I worry that they may distract themselves and risk failing to maintain the quality and VW brand while 'really' becoming the European Toyota. I personally rather VW not be a Toyota and mantain some level of exclusivity.

I wonder at the wisdom of bagging the styling of a car based on a single picture that is nothing more than an artists impression of what it will look like. Wait until you see it in the flesh then decide if you like it's looks.

I don't have a problem with VW producing a car like this and I don't see it clashing with the Eos. Hardtop convertible looks infinitely better than a rag top and is far more practical.

Tons of options around engines, be interesting to see if we get them all here and pricing. With the GTI engine, surely there's some overlap with Eos?

Engine choices are also well known from the current Golf range, with petrol options comprising 77kW 1.2-litre turbo, 90kW 1.4-litre turbo, 118kW 1.4-litre 'twincharger', and the 155kW 2.0-litre turbo engine from the GTI.
Turbo diesels include a 77kW 1.6-litre and 103kW 2.0-litre.

I'm not sure that it's being "supersized", but apparently it's a more independent model than the current version which is obviously heavily based on the Golf. This is just from the rumour mill though - we obviously won't know for certain until we see a near-product car at a motorshow

I think I read somewhere that the next Eos will be based on the Passat platform, and will sit somewhere between a 3-series convertible and an E-class cabriolet in terms of size.

I think it's actually not too bad.
Something my sister would definitely want. Only problem I have is that it does as someone said earlier assert the fact that golfs are quite feminine. I see it as the same as the 1 series convertible. Very feminine car and as a result a lot of people see the coupe as feminine. (just for the record, I don't. I want one. )
But nevertheless. I believe vw will make some great sales out of this model.
