One would have thought that this was easily achieved with the tilting steering and adjustable standard seat (back and forth, up and down).
Took me a week to find the best position yet I don't think I'm still 100% happy (maybe I'm just being anal).
My problem was finding the right balance between the top of the steering not blocking the signal indicators and getting sufficient clearance between my knee and the steering. Didn't like the idea of having the steering half way up or down so I had it all the way down (yes, definately me being anal).
All this while trying to mantain the right reach and bend in my arm.
About the same height and after 10 months still have haven't quite found the right seating position (about 90% there). still trying to find the right balance between distance from the clutch and not having my knees hitting the bottom of the steering column, which also makes the seating position too cramped. It would probably help if I could adjust the tilt of the seat cushion (yes I know that's available on the leather seats as an extra option - next time ?)

as for washing the car I just reach the centre of the roof, the Golf is certainly the tallest car I have ever owned.

I'm 1.8m tall and I,too, have to stretch while I'm washing the roof of the car. My driving position is perfect for me, but I have to do the swivel to get out of the car. I have to wear steel-capped safety shoes where I work, and as a result I have scuffed the inside of the driver's door with my size 8-1/2 Steel Blue Footwear. Similarly at home, when the car's parked in my garage, it doesn't leave a lot of room for me to exit so I often find my right foot coming into contact with the inside of the door.

As far as driving position goes I have to accept a small compromise since the steering wheel doesn't come out quite as far as I'd like, so I'm either too close to the pedals or reaching more for the wheel than I'd like. I'm about 1.80something as well

I like the way you're thinking.....
Not sure on the stilt idea, but the stable chair has merit too.

Ok, so suspension has been dislodged from the ideas bank for now......

I found that if my thighs and knees were too close to the bottom of the steering (in your case knees both sides of the wheel), manouvering in and out is a real hassle in tight spaces/car bays while having to avoid my heels (some leather shoes have hard soles) scratching the door sill and plastic seat corner/edge (and bum on the seat side support). I think mine being a 3-door also contributed to this, but didn't have this problem with my Integra.
I was driving a BMW X5 the other day and the steering wheel electrically raises and retracts to aid getting out (as if you need it in a X5).

VW's answer to our seating position issues will be a complimentary VW branded whoopie cushion! With the price we're paying (as opposed to BMWs), they might even let us choose the whoopie cushion colour to match the car.

Should organise a car wash get together where the tall freaks wash the outside and the gary colemans vacuum the inside!
