I sat in one when it first came out. The interior could not be any cheaper in quality. The seat and door panel cloth print is hideous. Plastic exterior panels also look cheap. Less is best.
190KW to front wheels is just stupid and will have you in the side of a tree in no time.
VW Golf R APR Stage II... Here I come...
Yep test drove one of these and have to agree.. I got out of the car uninspired.. Also drove the 370Z.. pretty good, but not practical enough... besides was big $$ on road. Reading all the current mag reviews the R is getting some great reviews... including the latest motor mag up against the Sti and Evo X.. great value IMO
I like the Focus for what it is.. i'm sure they will all sell even at that crazy price..
2011 Golf R MKVI | Candy White | 5 door | DSG | ACC | 19" Black rims | Vienna Leather Electric | RNS510 | Dynaudio | MY11 Bluetooth | Sunroof | Stage 1 APR Tune | On the road again...
I'm starting to see quite a few Rs on the road now. Not quite as often as I see GTIs, but they're there. Based on what I'm seeing, and reading, the R will be a much more popular successor to the R32, and buyers are lapping up the fantastic value it offers. I hope the MkVII R is equally well-priced when it comes time for me to consider my next car.
As for interior quality... I'd say the Golf comes very close to matching a mid-level BMW 3 series in the materials, fit and finish stakes. There are a few small details that do let the VW down a bit, but they're just that - small details - and don't really detract from the overall impression of quality. I used to think my Honda interiors were good, but IMO anything sub-Legend doesn't match the Golf from the perspective of materials quality (if not ergonomics).

The interior of the R was better than that of the 135i I test drove. IMO the interior of the 1-series felt cheaper so I am not surprised that you found it almost matching the interior quality of the 3 series.
who'd want a ''focussed hot hatch'', with stiff ride, tight seats and all the other sensory aides, that's quickest in "dont touch the flappers, leave it in auto mode"?
'ch'is why the renaultsports are manual.
I don't understand what you are saying?
Are you suggesting Manuals are faster?
Golf R MY 11.5 United Gray, 3 door, DSG, ACC, Free MDI, Bluetooth Mods - APR Downpipe, VW Racing AI, HPFP, APR Tune Stage 2+- lovin it! Touareg V8 TDI R-Line, White .Arrived 11 July.
not at all- we all know that nowadays, they're markedly slower.
i am saying that they appeal to sensory perceptions much more than automatics/ flappy paddles (in my humble....)
Without launch control being utilised the Manual car will be quiicker off the line, however the DSG would probably be quicker overall.
Also i mirror your comments about being more engaged with a Manual box.
Driving the auto GTI at the driver training day fealt really removed.
It was like you were playing a video game as you never had to make sure your gearing was set up for the next corner, it was just speed up and slow down and turn.
Who ever is saying they are not impressed by BMWs interior, compared with a golfs is an idiot. I'll take a photo of the door trim later on a BMW coupe.. But i really dont know if it would be worth it. The door is like a massive sheet of stitched leather for gods sake and weighs a tonne, as in doesn't just make a good thud, it's damn tank solid.
The golfs on the hand is "soft touch" plastic. Cmon, it is the cheap end of euro.
Go sit in BMW Merc or Audi 3,A4,C class and above and see why the cars can cost over $100k for yourself.
Sometimes the same people who will bag ford, Holden, can't be seen to accept or appreciate the other side of the hierarchy... It's there.

I'd agree in relation to the better BMW 3 series REXman, but seriously, the BMW 1 interior is worse than a Golf (MKV or MK6). Even if they have put stitched leather on the door inserts in recent 135s, doesn't make up for the plainer, cheaper, harder plastics used elsewhere.
MPS is rubbish.190KW to front wheels is just stupid and will have you in the side of a tree in no time.
Yet a 200kw Toyota Aurion weighing only 1590kg seems to cope with that power fairly easily through the front wheels. There's not much sensation that anything is driving through anywhere with that. But my mate's first gen 3MPS scares me, especially in the wet.
To throw a bit of perspective, we have an 08' X5 3.0sd Sports Excecutive in our garage, and honestly I find the interior of the Golf and it to be quite close to par (although the Bimmer's seats are exquisite, and the Panoramic sunroof is beautiful). It is no detriment to the Beemer as much as it is an accolade to the VW Golf build quality.

Well for the cheap end of the euro, the cheap 'soft touch' plastic looks fairly classy. Sit in a Fiat Punto if you want see cheap euro hard plastic (although done with style, but still cheap). or an XR5 Focus for that matter.
Very good points. I've a Focus and an (old) Polo downstairs. The Polo is the cheaper of the two, but you'd never deduce that by looking/using/touching/driving them both.

I've spent plenty of time in an E90 320i, and I can tell you, it ain't all lollipops and rainbows. The quality is good, but it's not leagues ahead of the Golf by any means. The 3 is a fairly premium car, especially in Australia considering the prices we're paying, but I'm wondering if the higher-end 3s are fitted with higher-grade interior trim that befits their greater prices. A 320i starts at $55k, whereas an M3 4dr manual starts at $145k. That's quite a variance for what is fundamentally the same core vehicle.
REXman, don't sell the Golfs short - seriously, they're amazingly good for the price. Just wait till you've received yours and have had time to appreciate the details.
