  • Akrapovic Exhaust for Mk6 GTI

After hunting around for a while I decided to take the leap and purchased a new exhaust (Catback only) for the GTI, and this arrived at TopOne early Wednesday morning.

For some background, Akrapovic is a well known exhaust/CF manufacturer for motorcycles and divested its interests into cars some time ago. Until now most of their work has focussed on Porsche 911 and BMW M3 models/variants with some pretty impressive results. I'm not sure what inspired them, but they have made one for the Mk6 GTI, in what they term a 'slip on' exhaust. The system comes with either full Titanium or CF (with Titanium inner) tips depending on your taste, and can be bought as a full cat back, partial (requiring cutting) or just the tips (requires cutting).

So up on the hoists, and out with the new...

    and in with the new....

Of course it wouldn't be complete without the party piece

mmmm CF tips with a Titanium inner.....

And of course the finished product...

Initial thoughts, its much much louder than stock (surprise surprise) it has a very deep growl to it and can be reasonably quiet when not putting my foot down for the occasional squirt. I have an issue with the drone around the 1500rpm atm, hopefully this will decrease as it beds in, but only time will tell.

Just want to point out I have no affiliation with the company nor their dealer in Aus, but have been very impressed with Erik from evlmotorsports Vic as the principle dealer, prompt communication, friendly and a pleasure to deal with.

Damn those tips look sexy! (not to mention the whole system)
Do keep us posted with power gains, flow and performance.
Wouldn't mind knowing the price too if you don't mind.

Not sure of performance gains, they claim an increase in power of 4 HP and 6 Nm but amazingly it reduces the weight by around 7kg , as its not a turbo back wasnt expecting power gains and my butt dyno hasnt registered a big change....

As for price it varies heaps at the moment given the AU$, but for the tips alone around $800 and a guy in the states paid high US$2K for his system from memory. I paid somewhere between the two for mine and got the CF tips with full catback which included the 'link' pipe.

Damn these Akrapovic's look amazing (repeating myself), they're pieces of art. Just purely from the pics, their workmanship looks first class.
Love the 'racey' note from the exhaust but a bit loud for my daily GTI. 7kgs lighter than stock is a real bonus but minimal power gains really puts the price in perspective. On a tight budget like mine, I would choose to spend the 2k on a reflash instead. No doubt these Akrapovic Exhaust are worth it.

Hey nice exhausts, both of you! They look amazing. They look extremely well engineered, whilst still looking tough at the same time. Perfect. Bet they sound alright.. Sound clips if you ever can get round to it

Haha I was perusing through the forum when I saw someone had Posted something about Akro exhausts for cars. I couldnt work out what you were talking about because I thought they only did stuff for bikes!!!

Good looking system you have there, looks good with the carbon Fibre tips! =P It seems to be the thing they do, I had an Akro system for one of my bikes, the term slip on is usually meant for just the back part of the system, but they almost all come with the carbon fibre bits at the back on motorcycles....you can get them not to, but they look so much better with it!.

Looks good anyway, I hope they can do something for the vr!!!

Very very nice , just wondering is this a 3inch cat back or just same size as stock gti ?? No one really talks about the Akrapovic pipe size not even there site which is weird.
And how is the drone going is it still there ???

thanks, wow seems to be the night for this, the local rep emailed me tonight as well.

not sure on the size of the Cat to be honest off the top of my head, but given you can attach parts of it to the stock I'd guesstimate it was stock size.

Drone is still there, but has lessened since bedding in, and I have to say that after a good drive today between the exhaust and the CAI on the car my god it makes some damn fine noises now when pushing it, cant wait to hit the track in a week or so and see what its like there...
