Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Wheels Magazine - Golf R vs STi vs Evo

Just picked up the latest copy of Wheels Magazine. They have a road test of the Golf R against the new STi Sedan and the Evo MR.

To be honest they mainly discuss the STi due to it being the newest of the group but it certainly sounds as though it's a pretty potent machine.

I won't give too much away apart from all cars had their strengths and flaws.

Check out the speeds in gears section.According to Wheels, the Golf R does 111kph in second gear @ 7000rpm.
    Try about 95kph @ 6700rpm.
Looks like they've swapped the speed in gears with the STi.........

Cant you get the R to 7000rpm redline/fuel cut out?

I know it definitely went over the 6500rpm's at the very least.

The comparison was done in the Snowy Mountains, plenty of nice pics of the cars getting sideways on the white stuff.

Basically they said the R was the odd man out. The other two were more hard core, focused, WRC-like machines, but the R was the one they would prefer to live with every day.

Like the always say about the VW hot hatches..

Never the most hardcore, but very polished and satisfying all rounders..

ever since the MKV GTI made it's appearance. can't see the formula changing when such a sales success!!

I think that's what VW tries to aim to with their hot hatches. Older people like us who still want a decent 'zippy' car but don't want to be classed in the boy racer group anymore. Sure it's easier to extract power from the STI or EVO but sometimes you don't want to be targetted by police everywhere you go
