  • Percentage of Golf R to GTI purchases

Was hoping a dealer could give a guestimate of how many Golf R's are being sold as opposed to GTI's. Just by reading the forums there seems to be alot of people waiting on R's Will they become a common car?

I used to see bugger all R32's around the place but with all the feedback on the forums here perhaps there are many more R sales being made this year?
2007 Golf GT Sport TDi sold!
2011 Golf R 3 door Candy White with all the non carbon fibre fruit !
    2011 Tiguan 147TSI

I am not a dealer, and this is coming from my none to effective memory BUT IIRC R 10% of Golfs, GTI 25%, leaving 65% for the rest.

Bear in mind that the GTI has been out for a while, so there is more pent up demand for the R.

According the Volkwagen Group Australia, the MKV Golf R32 sold 2041 over the past four years since it was introduced in Australia in 2006. 82 per cent were equipped with DSG and five-door models accounted for 77 per cent of R32 sales.

I have also seen on several occasions that the GTI accounts for 1 in 4 Golf sales in Australia (which would agree with cme2c's figures. I'm haven't seen a total Golf sales to then relate whether "2041" does make the R32 equate the 10% of sales.

Either way.... there are an awful lot of GTI sales still occurring!

Thanks Maverick. So obviously a certain portion of those 2009 figures are going to be MKV and the majority will be MK6 cars. Either way, 2006 to 2008 totals 32262, so the 2041 R32's sold only equates to 6.3%

Don't forget that they didn't sell many in 2006 and still sold some in 2009 but it probably works out around the same percentage if not slightly higher. IIRC they even sold the last of the new ones early this year.

When I last visited McGraths at Liverpool a few weeks ago they still had a (I think) new R32 for sale.

It's hilarious how little WRX's were sold - 4 regular, 2 STI's. It's also surprising how many XR5's were sold.

Isn't there a new WRX due out ? Probably account for such few sales, waiting on the new vehicle to arrive.

Yep new wide body WRX is coming out this september you'd be nuts to buy one now. The sit not only is going to be offered in sedan also this year, but just lapped the nuirbring however it's spelt, in 7:55 secs.. That's how strong the new handling adjustments are.

But they still don't have a cure for the fugly exterior and low rent interior

Yeah true but I think the kind of person that buys a WRX doesnt care about brand image and interiors as much, its all about the out and out performance baby! Which the WRX obviously owns on the VW R and GTI's.

But I bought my VW cause it is lower key, cheaper on petrol and insurance - Its 'smart' buy to be honest. Not necessarily a better one to all.
