Oettinger make a 103kW/320Nm to 125kW/370Nm tune for your car. Oettinger are not the cheapest of tunes though, but it'd still be much cheaper than getting a GTI. There's also probably other tuners that can do something with the TDI motors.

I'm not sure that I'd be willing to take that much of a hit within the 1st year of ownership to swap cars.

I don't know much about it/them (nor about tuning) so worth doing your research/homework first.
