I reckon I can get everything I need into the back without folding the seats down just not sure about the boogie board that might be the deal breaker.. anyone had a go at that..?

I've had the R for a while now and we still have my wife's Mark V Comfortline. So far we've not been stretched for space (2 kids - see page 1).
We've been away for a few road trips and whilst we are pretty full there's been no real problem - I was thinking I may need a roof pod.
We are about to start the process of getting rid of the mark v and getting the wife a new car - I've got no real inclination to get another SUV of any shape - but it's hard to find a decent wagon these days.

IMO - boot in Golf R too small. Cannot fit pram and other goodies for kids. In the GTI however, it's nice and deep and has ample space. Wife and I did a test with both cars.

Back seats on both - tick! Heaps of room.

Roof racks ordered on mine to accommodate bike and trips away.

My suggestion would be to get a golf R if you want a fun and quick car to drive and that you will enjoy. However get the wife another car which has more booth space and that you will enjoy driving once in a while. I cant wait to get rid of the CRV and get my wife a Touareg in 3-4 years.

I reckon if you bought an R with roof bars and a luggage compartment (for the long trips) it would make an awesome car for a young familay.

Is it a practical family car? YES! (Golf R 5 door)

Since getting this last December we have driven the family (two adults, kids 7 and 5years still using booster seats) from Melbourne to Canberra and back (~700km one way, mostly freeways), from Melbourne to Lakes Entrance (~350km) on to Fallcreeks (~200km of wiggle mountain roads ) them back the Melbourne (~350km mixed) and done all the usual work/family running around.

                Very Happy.

EDIT: oh allt hese trips were done with all the usual luggage for the family neatly packed into the boot!, no extra space required (trailers/roof racks etc)
