Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I just got my mk6 gti, and i havent got the rattle. I have 900km on the clock.
I do notice though, that when i go over bumps on an angle, the doors squeak as if they moved up and down. Its more of a rubber compressing noise. anyone else have this??

    thx

I am still trying to figure out how a small rod can rattle so loudly. Im still convinced its a heatsheild / exhaust rattle. Come on VW, you can do better than this....... I hope.
I thought that the MkV and MkVI had the same engines except for some adjustments to the additional KWs ?
If that's the case then it shouldn't be the engine ?

      [and engine rattle accelerating @ 2-3k rpm ==> otherwise "it's a beauty"]

The Mk V GTI had a cam belt engine, the Mk 6 GTI has a cam chain engine (EA888 family). There are numerous other differences too (eg No of lobes on the HPFP cam).

Mine gave a few hammer sound when accelerate hard from stand still on the wet road this morning. Is this the same or is this from ABS kick?

That's more than likely your tyres losing grip and the front of the car bouncing slightly.... commonly refered to as axle tramp.

Are replacing the tyres the only way to fix this?

Went over to volkspower to get the ECU remapped, and Dean took me for a ride in his MK6 and man when he puts his foot down his car just goes.....

mine on the other hand does a few little jumps before it goes... sob sob.

Well, suspension upgrades can help. Wheel balancing also.
Though I have found that tyres can certainly be a cause.

Thats funny my last car was an Astra Turbo and I had the exact same thing, a raspy, mettalic rattle at certain Revs..

First was told it was the Cat converter, then the exhaust, then the turbo... Basically they had NFI..... didn't affect the car in any way...

                    ....until the turbo blew up..

Nah just kidding, that was one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned.

IIRC some people have also noticed improvements with firmer engine/gearbox mounts (but get more NVH).

Uneven road surfaces frequently make it much worse.

Many people learn to accelerate a little more gently at first to avoid it.

I took a GTI for a second test drive over the weekend, and specifically tried to replicate the rattle (the demonstrator had 70kms on the clock).

You can definitely notice it if the conditions are right - ie windows down, stereo off, a certain amount of revs, a certain amount of throttle. Even then, I only noticed a faint rattle about a quarter of the time.

However, I don't think many people would notice it if they weren't told it could rattle to begin with.

It gets louder trust me! but your right you need to set a few perimeters right before you can hear the sound but I hear it these days with the windows up, which used to keep the sound out a couple a weeks ago.

So does it get to the point where you want to sell the car and get rid of it because it is annoying?

So far its been as annoying as having a fly buzzing around your ear every now and then...... still love the car! just got the ECU flash a couple of days ago and planning to do a couple more things to it....but still hoping someone out there will find a fix soon.

No, Still love the car. It is annoying but not enough to warrant getting rid of the car. When I have some free time, I will take it to a friends shop and get it on the hoist to have a better look. There has to be a way to get rid of it.
