Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Thought I'd chime in and say after 3 weeks of owning my GTI I have the same rattle. It started right at the beginning but has got slightly worse.

The steel wool in a can description is pretty good. It happens mostly in gears 1-3 from 1500-3000.

I'm not too fussed by it, but if someone gets official word on whether it is a fault or not, please post it here.

      Read the previous page.

Incidentally, I met up with Mirsad over the weekend and we confirmed the rattles coming from our cars are identical.

If the rattle is not someting minor like the heat shield or fuel line dislodged from the rail, there is a possibility that it may be a bearing in the DSG gearbox, esp if it increases with rpm speed. One of the Aus motoring mags had a long term Skoda Octavia with 7 speed DSG with bad bearings from a batch. Gearbox was replaced under warranty. Similar thing with a Lambo long termer in one of the UK mags (CAR I think). Gearbox replacement sighting bad batch of bearings. May be an issue right way through the VW family with a bad batch of bearings from one manufacturer. Tme will tell. Problem should be rectified by now with later build vehicles.

        Cheers.

Again - read the previous pages. The source of the rattle has been confirmed. I just want to know how widespread it is and if we can change VW's policy of not fixing it. If it occurs with only some cars, then it is certainly not a "characteristic of the car" and should be fixed under warranty.

I'd love to know if your car has the noise. To best hear it, have the windows down, no air con or stereo, then accelerate moderately from rest keeping the revs around 2500. Pretty sure it happens from day 1, but may take a few hundred kms to kick in.

                Hi mate,

My friend has a MK6 GTI DSG and we have noticed a 'metalic raspy' noise at these revs (which is quite noticeable to a proper driver- not just a camry type) when the change of gears occurs. Been back to the dealer, who had no idea what we were talking about. It is not too bad, just annoying now that it has been noticed.

                It has done 2,800kms.

Is that the sort of noise you mean? Almost like a shroud or heat shield? Ours seems to go once it gets warmer.

Have you had any success working it out?

Check out my previous posts in this thread. Although I have a tough time describing the noise itself (descriptions are very subjective), the cause and the circumstances have been established. 2000-3000rpm, during moderate acceleration. It doesn't only occur during change of gear.

                    Awwwwwww....

I just picked up my GTI last Friday and as soon as I drove it off the floor I heard the rattle.....

Its not bad as in I can live with it but its quite clear and only on low revs acceleration.

Is there anyway we can try and figure out how to stop the noise cuz clearly the dealerships aren't going to help.

On a serious note, i have it too and now that i have read these posts can easily recreate it so next time i am at the service centre (maybe tomorrow) can give a more detailed instruction on how to make it happen than "Flog It a bit"

This is a bit of a worry, I hope my GTI doesn't have this rattle when it arrives in a couple of months.

Are there any clips or examples around on YouTube or anything?

Its going to be very hard to record it.

I just ran out and drove the car with my friend in it to be sure that I was not imagining things and he too hear the sound.

It sounds like 2 thin metal strips clashing together but you can only hear the high pitch bits.....

                          yes I'm high!

Im about to place an order in a couple of weeks for the MKVI but this rattling noise is worrying me a bit.
Might test drive some more and see if i can notice it and whether i can live with it or not.

if they had discovered this rattle during development, they would have never released it without fixing, but now that they know it exists, sounds like they're just going with it and saying "it's a characteristic of the car"... well if the car backfires all the time, but it still drives fine, that's could be argured also as just a characteristic really...
basically they would have done an anlysis and realised to solve this issue, they'd have to redisign the wastgate or something, then make new wastegates for all these cars, and then all the labour time in repairing... would basically send em broke, so they've taken the easy route out
