Rough / Uneven / Bubbling paint finish on the side skirts / sills

Can some other MK6 GTI owners please let me know if this is considered normal.

But if you run your hand along the bottom side of your cars, where the side skirts are.

Where your front and rear wheel arches start, is your paint finish feel rough? almost like it has bubbled?

Please note, this starts to form on the paint that is facing us in this image, and then it gets alot more rough with the paint that is on the underside of the side skirt, facing the road.

Please note, this starts to form on the paint that is facing us in this image, and then it gets alot more rough with the paint that is on the underside of the side skirt, facing the road.

It's perfectly normal and most cars have the same finish there. Look at where it's painted and imagine what is going to occur to that paint in it's lifetime with rocks and other debri being thrown up. Now get down with a torch and look at how consistent it is and how it has a sharp line where it goes back to a smooth finish.

Perhaps the mods could change the title to "neurotic owner imagining faults and problems with car" so that others do not see it and think it's a fault!

Yes, this is totally normal, as Maverick has stated. Many cars for many years have had this - even "cheap" cars like the Toyota Echo/Yaris *cough*

If it was smooth i think you'd notice scratches very easily from road debris & rocks etc.

Sharkablue,i posted the exact same issue that you've got as well.. mine has the bubbly kind of feel alongside the skirting..

i am bringing it back to the dealer this weekend to have a look at.

Isnt the "bubbly kinda feel" just the chip resistant paint coating most manufacturers use in those areas?

Guys, it's COMPLETELY normal and is a feature on many, many cars from most manufacturers. Save yourselves the embarrasment of making a fool of yourselves at the dealerships and have a look at any other Golf (and many other cars) which don't have full length side skirts covering the entire lower sill. As I said, even the 2001 Toyota Echo that was in my family had it...

That rough affect on the sills is called stone guard. A nice shiny flat paint finish on the sills would show up all the stone chips.
