  • Thump noise when up shifting on GTI DSG

Hi all, just got my gti the other day, having a lot of fun driving around.

I noticed a "thump" noise when up shifting on the DSG. The thump is louder if I am accelerating harder when I up shift. Is this normal? Any one else experience this? Especially noticeable on 1st to 2nd.

Also when down shifting sometimes the engine is revved up too much, and I have to wait for the revs to drop before the clutch finally engages. Feels kind of strange because the accelerator does nothing until the clutch finally engages.

Something definitely not right there. Chat with your service dept.

the thump, in my opinion, is the "farting" noise attributed to the fast change...

      I love it

and let me get this right.. are you inferring that you're trying to over-rev the car on a downshift and you're complaining that the fly by wire wont let you????

I thought the "farting" noise is on a down shift, not an up shift? I don't hear any weird noises on the down shift, only up shift.

The over revving thing I'm talking about is not over revving the engine, but over revving for the gear. For example, say I am doing 3000 RPM, and I want to down gear. Say the RPM in the lower gear the RPM should be 4000, but the engine gets "blipped" to 4500, then I have to wait for it to drop to 4000 before the clutch is engaged. It's not a big problem, I just noticed it a few times.

My main concern is the "thump" noise on the up shift. Kinda feels like the clutch was dropped too quickly.

The DSG GTI farts on up and down shift. Volume depends on the revs.

Your second description is odd - I haven't experienced that. But I have had the 1st to 2nd thump a couple of times - only when manually changing between the two soon after reversing. I think in my case it was just the clutch having reverse, not 2nd selected before the manual change. It's a very obvious thump, so to have it happen in other gears would concern me.

Are you sure that the ESP isn't cutting in? Watch the instrument cluster whilst you're doing this to see whether the traction light flashes...

I don't think the ESP should be engaging...both times it happened I was heading dead straight at moderate speeds (~60-70km/h). I had the accelerator pressed down (I wanted to go faster). Should I let go of the accelerator pedal when down shifting?

hitting the accelerator is probably telling the dsg to automatically select the next gear up, not down...hence you should try downshifting then nailing it

                just a thought

Well I think the "thump" noise I talked about is the DSG "fart". Driving around today I noticed it came from the rear. I'm getting more used it!

OK then I was way off. I never thought of the sound as a "thump", but I guess noises are quite subjective.

reliving an old thread. In regards to this thumping noise, im starting to get the same in mkv golf. Sounds like a loud thump at the mid/rear under carriage.

Did you find out what the fault was as its starting to annoy me as well

No. But I have not heard it since. Weird!
