I'd prefer having to take the cap right off and sit it somewhere rather then it hanging below the filler and rubbing on the panel.
Seems there isn't a quck fix, so I'll just cut (or remove if its possible) the retainer. I must be getting soft in my old age, little things like this never used to anoy me.
86 years old and somewhere about 80 cars and trucks (and the odd tractor) — long since lost count...
Can't remember any of them having anywhere to put the filler cap when removed other than a trouser pocket, on top of the car or sometimes on top of the tank, on the top of the bowser if it's flat.
Several had the quick-action cap (Triumph TR2, for instance) and a couple had them on a spring or a wire cable. Some screwed on or in, some pushed on, some were like a radiator cap, one or two were just half a tennis ball pushed over the orifice in place of the missing cap... All more-or-less worked.
I do agree that VW could do better than the one on the Mk VI without it costing them any more.
Well you win on that one mate. haha. I was discussing with my dad last night actually on how much times have changed with cars and what you get with cars these days compared to when i started out. I bet you could tell some interesting stories.

I had found the same problem with the Golf fuel cap holder, until I turned the cap around so it rests on the outside rather than the inside of the filler flap. Has never fallen off since!
Seriously though, a bit of velcro on each side is a pretty easy fix if it was that much of a problem. I've tried numerous times with the cut out on the cap to sit on the fuel cap-door but it never works
and its not gonna scratch the paintwork so badly is it? At least you don't have to manually pop the fuel door from inside the car anymore
I quite liked the fuel door release inside the car. The pressing of the cover feels cheaper in comparison.
(I'm not suggesting the internal release was in any way better but it was obviously more expensive to build)

Probably not - it still frustrates you driving a 1 day old car into a servo and having something tap against it (regardless of how softley).
I just don't get why they left off a decent bracket - they obvously thought about it because they came up with the idea of the little cut outs. It can't possibly have been very hard to come up with something better.
Anyway I've had my little vent - it is a great car even with a dodgy arangement to hold the fuel cap.

Has anyone thought they maybe no room to fit a bracket between the flap and the fitted petrol cap?
The fuel cap - why isn't there a holder for it - yes I know it has that stupid cutout that you are supposed to hang it over the flap lid on, but it doesn't work, it just slides off and falls and smacks into the quater panel.
What the hell is wrong with a decent cradle on the flap like every car I've owned since the 80s had?
Such a nice car that makes me agro at the manufacturer every time I go to fill it up!!!!
Anyone have a simple solution - I'm about to cut the plastic retainer so I can just take it off completely.
It works fine for me, I've never had a problem with it on any Golf/Jetta/Beetle/Caddy I've refilled and each time the fuel cap fitted nicely onto the fuel flap and stayed there.
Perhaps they only had co-ordinated people do the testing before they sent this into production?
The simple solution is to look at it and address the issue which is the way you're sitting it on the flap, you're not launching a rocket to the moon and you're just sitting the fuel cap on the flap. The only area you can go wrong with is if you have the plastic retaining strap twisted.

What is so hard about pressing a button to open? You pop it open from the drivers door when you're getting out. The new system is rubbish and is only about saving dollars as you have to press it both to open and close it and you can't close it with the doors locked. The old system had it locked all the time and the only way to open it was to press a button inside the car.
I honestly can't believe that this is even coming up as an issue! It is so trivial!
My last car was a 2005 WRX STi and that only had a strap.. I used to hang it over the door.. It hit my panel a few times but never scratched or dented it.. I did not give it a second thought.

Didn't say the old system was difficult, just thought not having to bother was handy
After all this discussion, not really able to comment as still to receive new Golf
But. Two things
Re popping flap from inside of car, this DOES provide a small measure against petrol (siphon) thieves,
(Although I think modern design prevents siphon in any case)
Re tethered fuel cap, I prefer, as have lost a couple.

Hi Cossor,
The fuel cap flap is locked closed by a small solenoid pin that activates when the doors lock. so when your car is parked and locked, so is your fuel cap flap.
I agree. Tethered fuel caps are the best thing since the schrader valve!
I'm sure you'll enjoy your Golf when you get it. VW is making a car that is a class or 2 above the competition. They're not without their faults, but their strengths make owning one worthwhile.
