Fuel Cap Issues

The fuel cap - why isn't there a holder for it - yes I know it has that stupid cutout that you are supposed to hang it over the flap lid on, but it doesn't work, it just slides off and falls and smacks into the quater panel.

What the hell is wrong with a decent cradle on the flap like every car I've owned since the 80s had?


Such a nice car that makes me agro at the manufacturer every time I go to fill it up!!!!


Anyone have a simple solution - I'm about to cut the plastic retainer so I can just take it off completely.

haha - i occasionally have this issue too but most of the time i can get it to stay on first time... you just need to move it more away from the car - so place the cap further out on the flap lid. That ususally works for me

Indeed, When i first went to fill it up i was standing there going "where the hell do i put this thing". I have never had a car that didnt have a cradle to put the cap on.

51 and 17 cars. I still think the best fuel cap solution was on my first car, an Austin 1800. The cap was a spring loaded arrangement integral with the locking flap. When you unlocked the flap, the tank was open, when you closed the flap, the tank was sealed. And yes the Golf idea is basically good, but the plastic retainer thingy tends to twist the cap out of alignment with the flap so it's hard to hook on. BTW my 2003 Peugeot has nowhere to put the very stylish cap.

The Golf is the first car I've had which had any form of cap placement solution. Every other car you just took the cap off and put it on the roof (hatchback) or boot (sedan/liftbacks)

86 years old and somewhere about 80 cars and trucks (and the odd tractor) — long since lost count...

Can't remember any of them having anywhere to put the filler cap when removed other than a trouser pocket, on top of the car or sometimes on top of the tank, on the top of the bowser if it's flat.

Several had the quick-action cap (Triumph TR2, for instance) and a couple had them on a spring or a wire cable. Some screwed on or in, some pushed on, some were like a radiator cap, one or two were just half a tennis ball pushed over the orifice in place of the missing cap... All more-or-less worked.

I do agree that VW could do better than the one on the Mk VI without it costing them any more.

Gosh, still waiting for my first very own Golf (Had a company provided Golf for a few months)
Re VW Aircooled vans, not even a petrol gauge. Be SURE to fuel up at start of each day.
(I remember well, rolling down hill to a service station. I kid you not!!)
However, Corolla has internal release for fuel tank access, plus a 'thing' on which to insert the cap during filling.
Having lost one cap on Holden Commodore (Explain to manager) I am surprised VW does not seem to provide a parking point for
the fuel cap in the fuell access door or filling area? (Yet to enjoy my Golf, jumping to conclusions)

Maybe the Mondeo's capless tank is the solution?

Strange, i never realised people had problems with the fuel cap set up! I find it works well and i've never had any issues with it at all. but i have come from 2 cars (old with no where to put the cap) and 2 bikes with, well, basic lockable seals. And i've never driven or at least refuelled a car with somewhere to 'park' the fuel cap... i need to get out and drive more cars!

Yeah, I'm in the same boat as you. I thought having the plastic strap that stops you from accidentally driving off with the fuel cap sitting on the boot meant that the Golf was proper posh.
