Anyway... just spend some more time in manual, get used to the speed vs RPM, and get more familiar with the car, and you'll come to know what gear you're in
But NASCAR do run the pace laps at the start of the race at pit lane speed, allowing the drivers to set their pit lights to the correct RPM. So they don't know their RPM but rather rely on the lights set at the start of the race. Plus after running at however many MPH race speeds, pit lane speed is almost impossible to pick correctly without any RPM, speed or light display.

Wow I didn't know you Mark VI owners didn't have the gear indicator on by default. What a pain. In the Mark V at least it's there all the time, albeit back to front. They really should have it nice and big by default without having to go into settings each time you start the car. Maybe a VAGCOM tinker could fix it?

They need to do the "check RPM to pace car speed procedure" because they're using different gears and rear gears at each track! Your car always has the same gears, so you'll be fine! And yes, they need to look at the RPM's to know what speed they're doing for the pits - that was my point.

        Look, lets make this simple.
If you're doing 60kph (look at your speedo) and your car is in 5th gear and your taco says that you're doing 1500rpm - then remember that.
Next time you change from D/S to M at 60kph, if you can't see the gear indicator, look at your taco. If it's 1500rpm you're in 5th! If it's lower than that you're in 6th or 7th, and if it's higher you're in 4th etc.

If you change from D/S to M at 120kph and your doing 3000rpm, then guess what... you're in 5th too!
It's not rocket science. It's just about getting more familiar with your car

How about, if you're not accelerating fast enough for what you want then change down a gear

            Not sure what you mean....

Gear ratio x engine RPM = Speed

            So if you're doing 10kph at 1000rpm in 1st gear, at 50kph you'll be doing 5000rpm.
            2nd gear may be 10kph at 700rpm, 50kph at 3500rpm.

So if you're doing 50kph in 2nd and want to shift to 1st, you'd know before hand that you'll be at 5000rpm. It's not variable, it's just simple math. This is the basis behind rev matching etc (whether manually or electronically).

Again, through time and experience with your particular car, you will learn what these are (if you're care that is).

I shouldn't have to do maths to work out what gear I'm in. It should just stay on the damn display!!!

                lol!! WHat he says!!! ^^^

But with an auto it's different isn't it as you have the clutch slip and all that jazz (or Torque Convertor lock up etc)?

                Corey,

I understand where you are coming from and what you are saying, but every other manufacturer has it permanently displayed along with the TIME, why can't VW?

I wasn't talking about revs but rate of acceleration. Also in a joking way.

I'm keeping out of the gearshift indicator issue as I'd prefer not to have it there or more specifically not have the arrows saying I should change up/down gear for best fuel economy.

Does the manual have a gear display as well???

                    How wrong is that?

I could have sworn the manual MK6 GTI i drove had a gear indicator and an upshift indicator in the MFD.

Mine doesn't. It disappears in any mode beside the setup screen! It's a TSI btw!

The gear indicator works well in my manual GTI. MFD constantly reminds me to upshift whenever i stay too long in high RPM. No complaints so far

Dont know what gives here, but I've tried ALL day to turn my gear and time indication OFF in ANY mode.
                              Just cant do it.

I think I've tried all combinations of MFD and setup options but the bastard still stays there.
Please tell me how to do it

I hear your frustration, ozgti et al . . . dare lament any oversight in a VW product in this forum and you will be told why your concern or disappointment is misplaced, unwarranted or unjustified.

For mine, I find the refinement of the GTI's engine often means the most noticeable engine sound is from the exhaust. Combined with the engine's linear power delivery and abundant torque from relatively low revs, even in my manual I am sometimes surprised to find I am in a higher gear than I thought (eg in third instead of second) as the engine pulls so well.

Indeed, in another thread in this forum, Eclipze posted instructions on how to fit a "Shift Light" to a Mark VI GTI to provide a clear indication of engine revs without having to read the tacho: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f112...mk6-47021.html.

So, fortunate as those drivers are who do not need such aids as gear read-outs or Shift Lights, it would be nice if they weren't so dismissive of a legitimate gripe just because the issue is of no moment to them.

After all, if the gear-selected display were totally superfluous, VW would not have included it; the lament merely seems to be that it is not always available, and that seems like an oversight.
