  • End of Financial Year Sale question

My new GTI was ordered in March and is due to arrive next week. Question is: should I insist the dealer applies the end of FY sale offer to the price (ie: free stamp duty, rego, etc)? I've signed the contract, but I see there's a clause in there that allows them to increase stamp duties, taxes, etc if they need to. Does that also apply the other way around?

I'm also aware that metallic paint has dropped by $200 (to $500, vs the $700 I signed for). Another case for a price alteration?

I might give Consumer Affairs a call to see what they recommend...

I always think EOF sale is just a trick to attract more people to buy cars. It makes sure you have already save a certain amount of money but dealers will not allow for much more discounts. However, you can always negotiate for more discounts when you need to pay the on road costs. By the end of the day, the money you save will be about the same.

You signed the contract at a price you were obviously happy with.
No point in asking for a decrease in cost to you becasue you didn't buy it in June, you should have bargained all that stuff in to your purchase price when you signed for the car.

How would you like it if they tagged on an extra 2-3k to your car when it arrives becasue it was a specific month of the year?

The terms and conditions of the EOFY sale are that the car is ORDERED and DELIVERED during the period of the sale. Clearly your car is not ordered during the sale.

Also note, there is NO SUCH THING as "free stamp duty, rego etc". Obviously VW doesn't even collect that money, it goes to the roads authority, the tax office, and also the insurance company (for the CTP). So they're not free, VW / dealer are just paying that for you.

If you're happy to have your price "Reset back to RRP" and then the EOFY conditions applied, feel free to bring up that subject with the dealer. However, if you're already receiving a discount on your order, for all intents and purposes VW are already offering you the same deal - just under a different name.

I'm not pro-dealers and I'm the first to help people figure out what the should be able to negotiate to get the best deal possible, but going to Consumer Affairs seems rather brash and ungreatful to me.

Edit, sorry if I come across a bit strong, but there have been many posts in the vary negotation/prices threads about this, and people really have the wrong understanding of what's being offered by this sale etc.

yup, agreed on that for sure. my invoice showed the price of the car MINUS the discount (discount being what the CTP/Rego/Stamp Duty would have been caculated as) PLUS the CTP/Rego/Stamp Duty price...so in the end it makes it look like you didn't pay the on road costs.

I also received my receipt from the RTA in the mail yesterday with the Rego sticker...breaks down all the on road costs that I paid for the car on it

            You are kidding aren't you?

You agreed on a price and signed a contract.

it's just like buying anything from any store

I'm sure if I bought a new LED TV from JB Hifi at price x, and found out a week later they reduced it to price y, they're not going to give me back the difference if I asked them for it

Sorry, I thought I'd make two more comments about this.
To reconfirm, you are NOT paying Volkswagen or the dealer for your Stamp Duty (Tax office via the RTA), Registration (RTA), compulsary third-party insurance (Insurance company, with components which go to other government bodies). The dealer may collect your money, but they then pass it onto the necessary organisation. Volkswagen nor the dealer set these prices either, those other organisations and state and federal governments do! Therefore ALL car companies must have a clause which allows them increase these costs if necessary because they can be raised at any time by any of those organisations without any consultation of the dealers (obviously).

As for the $200 reduction in metallic paint. You are entitled to ask for that. HOWEVER, if you have negotiated a 10% discount on the car, then the reduction of $200 from the metallic paint might only be worth a change of say $180 in the contract price. Or the dealer might just give you the $200 because you asked nicely and they're nice and it's only $20 diff.
Having said all this about the $200, although you're entitled to ask for it to be passed along, it's still up to the dealer. They may have done you a very great deal already and so they've effectively already taken $200 off the metallic paint. Just remember that, although the price has dropped, you did sign a contract, and if the situation was reversed and the metallic paint had gone UP $200, I'm sure you wouldn't be happy about having to pay that extra.

                Good luck

As the others said but I would also call the ACCC, Today Tonight and A Current Affair to really get your dealer offside.

And in general why on earth do all these questions keep popping up?
Are people unable to understand what a contract is or what it means?
Are they unable to read/understand the terms and conditions of promotions?
Why on earth are people so quick to go running to organisations like fair trading without talking to the retailer involved first?
Applying some common sense would give you the answer to these questions (as would searching).

Ok, lets not be too harsh. It seems contracts and "car prices" etc is a very complicated subject, the fact that there is a Consumer Affairs department, and the fact that the government decided to step in last year and regulate the way car prices are advertised and calculated shows that this is a complex subject and that consumers often don't understand. These forums are here to help people, so that is what we've done by answering this

Why don't you just ask the dealer if they can look after you considering the current special and you haven't taken delivery yet.

No need to go to a current affair first LOL!

Maybe take you dad down there with you.

Ps I did that once before I picked up a Honda as they has an end of year sale with discounted on roads and finance, and thought it was only fair. Then again the original deal prob wasn't amazing anyway.

                            Hi all,

Umm... sorry to anyone I offended (there seem to be quite a few of you!). It was a legitimate question -- if their contract is flexible in terms of raising prices, I'd wondered if it could also work in my favour to lower prices. My assumption was that VW would reimburse the dealer for the various taxes on any vehicle sold during that period, which could also apply to my sale.

By the way, I didn't contact Consumer Affairs to be vindictive or report the dealer (??!!) -- it was simply to see what the standard was in these cases. As they confirmed, "a contract is a contract", and any reduction would be at the discretion of the dealer.

Geepers... obviously I need to be more careful what I post on here...

Volkswagen had a sale going at the time I collected my vehicle, which was over 6 months from signing the contract for purchase. It was worth a few hundred off the price for me, although they did forget to register the GTI with Euro plates. I've heard that another person that collected their GTI 3 days before mine was delivered (same dealer) had extended warranty thrown in that is worth up to $2,000. Volkswagen may be generous. End of month targets can also be another factor in discounting (end of month stats).

                              Cheers.
