The difference is which people's opinion it is you care about.

Anyone who think's a Golf GTI is a 'girls car' is a bogan in my mind.
When stupid people disagree with me, it only serves to validate my opinions

Maybe they are attracted to live there because of the number of Golfs ??!

      • haha this is an entertaining thread

The only people i have had attention from in my golf is other VW GTI drivers and women telling me how nice it looks and how much i got it for (they were bogans too which was the concerning part). Does that mean it is a girly car or does it mean most people do not have a clue? What i do know is i would rather my GTI of any ford/holden any day!

        • In all seriousness, I've never previously heard anyone refer to even a basic Golf as a girl's car. It's a perfectly servicable hatch-back, and I've never heard of hatchbacks being categorically refered to as girl's cars either.
Where people tend to start thinking 'girl's car' is in ultra small and ultra ugly cars like the Nissan Micra (with it's stupid bug eyed headlights rising way too far above the line on the bonnet) or Daihatsu Sirion (same kind of thing). Or maybe those rediculous looking convertibles that (i think) Daihatsu (again) make.
You can also attract the stigma with something that looks a bit soft, like an mx-5.

But this is where you run into what I think is the crux of the issue.

Anyone who has actually driven an mx-5 knows it's an amazing driving machine. The same goes for a Golf GTI - even the people in this thread who have said "it's a girl's car" have just as quickly tempered their slander by saying it's an awesome car to actually drive.

          So I ask, what makes a "girl's car" ?
It's a similar question to the old "ricer or tuner"

If a car has good performance, good handling, is fun to drive, and even coined a whole new genre of performance vehicles... and if we're really going to be sexist about cars... wouldn't this car have to be classified as a man's car?

If you label a car by superficial image/looks alone and disregard performance/drivability, doesn't this make you a bit of a poser? a bit of a ricer? a bit of a girl?

          • My wife's Black 118TSI is a girly car. That's because it has a pink fairy hanging from the rear view mirror. Makes it easier for her to find it in carparks among all the other black hatchbacks. My Peugeot 206 GTi is a girly car too, despite only being made in manual. That's why it upsets Falcodore drivers a lot...

Of course, if I don't want to seem girly I just take the Bedford out for a spin.

            • I should also mention that Allianz simply refuses to insure my GTI if I list my 25yr old wife as a driver - because it's a "high performance model"
Needless to say, we won't be insuring with Allianz. What's the point of having a partner if she can't drive me home from the pub?

              • Apart from all this carping!
If a car is good looking, has the desired performance, then buy it
If the other sex also likes it, this just shows you have good judgement.
(And this comment applies to both attitudes)
OK, refer to "Top Gear" re performance cars
Yes, fantastic. BUT, BUT, what about living with one?
I think the real differance is the colour scheme.
Bright red, look out for patrol cars
                Pink, Ok for 'those areas'
Anyway, I like my colour selection

                    • I've enjoyed reading this thread and it got me thinking as to how we all choose our cars. I bought my current car (05 MINI Cooper S) because I really liked it (and still do) but I was the target demographic having owned an original Mini and being old. I am buying the GTI having been influenced by people that have owned them, my personal experience in driving them, the styling and performance of the cars, the gadgets and so on.

A girlfriend of my daughter bought her current car because the colour matched her bridesmaids dresses.

If you picked your Golf because of it's cute colour then yes it's a girly car!

Now my heart more toward a Golf...GTI..or possibly the "R".

                              Oh please ...

The MX5 is not a chick's car. It is a car for anyone who values driving purity. They are overwhelmingly men.

                              BMWs have never been chick's cars. Ever seen a chick driving an M5, a 135i, a 750i, a 6 series ?

Audis are for people who don't like or don't know anything about cars (R8 excepted).
