  • GTI Fire extinguisher

    Hi All,

Picked up my new GTI today and am loving it, however i got home and realised that the Fire extinguisher holder in the boot on the left hand side is empty. My question is should my car have been delivered with a Fire extinguisher? Did you car come with or without one?

I think i'm going to go back to the dealer tomorrow to find out if i should have gotten one. Thanks guys.

Sure it should be a fire extinguisher and not a warning triangle?

If they were including a fire extinguisher, don't you think it'd be part of the specifications of that car?
So no, there are no fire extinguishers.

I don't think you should have gotten a fire extinguisher withe car but certain countries (esp. in Europe) do require you carry one (along with things like first aid kits, hi-visibility vests, safety triangles etc. etc).

My take is that the strap could be used for any of these things.

            Regards,
            - Anthony.

I asked about it before signing off on the car and they said sure, we'll see if there's a spare one around. Got it free but its just a small standard one which you can find at RACV. I like driving as light as possible so I don't carry it around on daily drives, maybe if I'm going out station though. No big deal, I think its worth about 40-50 bucks.

My first aid kit fits neatly in there. Never know when you might need it.

Agreed, when the delivery guys was going through the car with me, he did mention that the strap was for a fire extinguisher etc, however I dare say VWA wants to make some money out of us, and having Mr Joe Public purchase one, instead of including it on the standard specs list. Until a Fed/State govt's mandate this safety feature, it will always be an option!

                  Cheers.....

This has been discussed before (check the mark V forum) and as others have said these are not included in Australia because our government appreciates that our drivers are too stupid to use a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, warning triangle, safety vest and safety hammer (the last two are only mandatory in a few EU countries but the first three are mandatory in all). Carry spare bulbs is also mandatory in most EU countries or your car can be taken off the road on the spot. Most EU countries make a first aid course etc mandatory when getting your license, unlike the kellogs system we use in Australia that see the most stupid of drivers get a license.

I'll have you know I got mine from Sanitarium. It's a far superior system to Kelloggs.

i got mine in 1941 — it came in a Weeties packet.

(Actually, one day the local cop buttonholed me in the main street of the town we lived some miles out from and said "You must be 18 by now — come up to the station and give me five bob and you won't have to leave your ute outside town and walk in."

I was actually 17 at the time and running the family farm single-handed whilst the old man was in the army — of course he knew that...

Just put a sub on the left hand side of the hatch and enjoy.

The strap is for a hazard triangle as far as i know. (Noticed the MK6 doesn't have a pocket on the RHS of the hatch anymore for a whine bottle or bottle of oil...???).

From what I read in the manual, the holder is for the emergency triangle and the strap is for the first aid kit, none of which are standard in Oz spec cars.

The holder on the RHS is just perfect for my first aid kit.
