Osborne Park on the other hand "recommended" to get the car serviced at 7500 kms. I asked what the manufacturer service schedule stated (knowing full well in advance) and was told that it was 15k kms but this way you can split the cost. Go figure hey I was told it was relatively cheap for the 15k service so why would you need to split it?

The answer is simply to make more money. In the process of negotiations they even told me that they make money on the servicing not selling cars. So I know that when I take my car there for a service I'm not going to get ripped off
I bought mine from Wangara, and it was delivered with a service sticker stating 7,500 kms. I've since had a letter reminding me the service is due, and a few weeks later, an SMS to the same effect.

Are these dealers really charging for a 7500km service? Has anybody been given a quote?

Must be an AHG thing then. I was told by the salesperson a few months back that they didnt expect to see me for 12 months or 15000kms whichever came first.

Also isnt an SMS such a friendly service reminder!

And by coincidence, within a day of writing my previous comment, I got a phone call asking when I was booking it in. I've got no issues with 7500km services given my driving scenario (lots of stop & start), but there's been a lot of recent talk (in another thread) about break-in oil that shouldn't be changed until 15000km etc., which has me wondering what the correct thing to do is. So I asked the lady at the other end of the phone to get someone to call me to explain the disparity between the 15k recommendation in the manual and the 7.5k the dealer recommends. No call yet, but I'll post again if anything new comes up.

Would love to know what they have to say.

Since I bought my motorbike in December they have been sending me service reminders every other month. Even though it isnt due till Jan 2011 now. It is purely for business.

One thing to remember... when you take it in tell them to service it by the book schedule.
Dealers have a sneaky reputation for overservicing vehicles.

As far as I can see in the 15K km service the only major items are engine oil and filter.

I haven't heard back from them yet, and given the amount of time that has passed, I am beginning to wonder whether I will.

My 103TDI is due for its first service, 7500km as stamped in the service schedule log-book. The dilemma I'm in is that Wangarra is 45 minutes up the freeway from where I live and considerably further from where I work, which is in the opposite direction. There's are two much closer VW dealerships to where I live, one's in Victoria Park and one's in Melville so I wonder if it would be unethical of me if I went to one of those instead?

No not unethical at all. If you wanted you can even take it to a non-dealer!

Thanks Hazamatic, I didn't want to put the Dealer Principal at VW Wangarra off-side, it's simply a matter of logistics.

Can someone tell what the 15k/1yr service actaully involves?

Obviously Oil change/Filter and fluid levels.
Check for Fault for codes and clear them if applicable. I have None..
Check for any service campaign. None due - as I just had one done.
Quick once over to make sure lights work, tyres aren't flat?

Kaching -$300 - $400 seems a steep if thats all that is done. What am I missing?
OTOH S'Pose its the price one pays to keep the warranty intact.

Warranty is not affected If you get the car serviced anywhere thats legitimate (authorised service centre). So a reputable local mechanic is fine for the oil changes etc.

For me buying the car at Parra, and living on the Lower N.S, It will be hard to get out to Parra for every service. I'm pro dealer service tbh, I serviced my previous Subaru's at my Subaru dealer for nearly 9 years (different cars) and had a great relationship with them.

But they were in Atarmon and it was close to convenient.

But for instance my GF bought a Mazda 3 MPS, and the dealer has offered her extended warranty for an extra 3 years and free Map updates If she services with them.

                            Depends.

I take my car to a local, experienced mechanic. Last service cost me $115.

                              $300+ is such a laugh!

Depends, there is no oil change service as such but a long checklist of areas to be checked. If the local mechanic misses areas and they prove to be a problem down the track you will find a warranty claim will be denied or looked at with greater scrutiny. Also need to ensure the correct oil is being used as this is another area where VW are very specific. If the car is serviced at a VW dealer this is noted on the cars history and other dealers can see that it was performed as per VW's requirements if warranty work is required.

A VW specialist may be ok but I wouldn't be taking it to any local mechanic as they won't have the skills or knowledge required to perform the service correctly.

Those extended warranties are worth nothing and cost the dealer under $100 to buy, most people can never claim on them because of the terms and conditions that guarantee you will have the warranty invalidated when you try to make a claim.

Also take a look at the limits and the exclusions, even if you did manage to keep the warranty valid the claim limits are tiny. The warranty is a con to get you to go back for servicing and not worth the paper they're written on.
