Selling a Mk6 Golf, what should I ask / expect?

Massive pain in the backside.

Was thinking of passing on the car to the old man, but he is in the market for a GTI.

Then the thought came of getting this car traded-in while he buys a GTI, but I will be left more out of pocket as the dealer wont be as accomodating with the price compared to a private sale.

Ive posted the car on the sale forum.

Hopefully someone notices it and contacts me, considering for 30k you are getting a almost brand new car (4000km & 3 months old)

118TSI + Chip = More power than a GTI.
Fit it with Detroits and he won't even notice the difference.

The trade in sounds reasonable.
I would call the dealer and see what they would offer.
They should be pretty good with it since it's only 2 months old or so.

I think they would give me around 22-25k for trade in, which is average.

Ive got my car on finance, so that why I would love the money to just pay the company. In the case of trade in, i dont think they will pay me the trade in with money.

Sorry to bring back an old thread.

Initially my travel overseas got postponed, but now they are back on.

Departure date is June, so I have some time to move my Golf.

Its done around 11,000kms now. Going to be sad to let it go, but I may aswell start looking for a new home for it so I dont leave things till the last minute.

Wonder what price it can fetch. I still reckon 30k but i could be wrong.

I have had a change of circumstances and it is currently looking like that having the MK6 GTI (which I waited 6 months for last year) is something that may need to be sold.

I am looking at travelling overseas this year for quite sometime and do not see the point in paying off a $13,000 car loan while im travelling.

So this is what my car has (yes I am aware that options dont account for much on a 2nd hand car)

Sunroof
Park Assist
Adapative Chassis Control
Media Device Interface
Sat Nav (RNS 510)
Bluetooth (9WZ) (forgot what its actually called, but its the proper VW Kit with voice dialling, stored phone numbers on the RNS510 and works with the white screen inbetween the speedo)
Reversing Camera
Euro Plates

So pretty much every option except Leather, Dynaudio and Electric/Heated Seats and Xenons.

Currently sitting on about 10,000KM

MK10 model year, I got it in August 2010 (after a 6 month wait).

Looking at carsales for victoria, the asking price for GTI's with low KM's is around the 45K Mark.

Would I be best to be asking for this? or is it too much, too little?

usually you'd loose 30% first year.

it's tough call to give opinions on how much to sell, but preparing and keeping your car in showroom conditions inside out and good photos on the ad, will help you sell it easier.

The car is in perfect condition and garaged. Wash it nearly every weekend, worst case every second weekend.

30% is quite overkill so you're saying a Gti would drop nearly $12-14k in price in 1 year???

I agree that a 30% discount does seem quite extreme. I have not even had the car for 1 year yet. Just over half a year in fact.

brand new rrp incl all those options seems to be around $54,308 per New Volkswagen Golf Hatchback for sale, Volkswagen Golf VI GTi Hatchback 3dr 2.0T - Discount New Cars

less the avg discounts smart buyers are getting , $47k could be a though asking price for yours, but who knows? there could be a willing buyer (considering the silly wait times to get a new one) and best to put it on the market first and see for any genuine bites for the first 2 weeks.

i've sold a number of cars before and those i listed within the redbook values were sold in the first week.

one car i advertised above the redbook values because it was only 2 months old, did not sell and only got 1 genuine query (which then asked for a couple of thousands lower after a test drive), and a couple of spams.

some buyers just don't care about the options that come with the car, there are always enthusiast buyers see them valuable and are willing to pay decent money for them in a used car.

why not try listing it on the forums first? save you $60.

...Just by way of comparison - I bought a 2011/MY11.5 GTI, exact same spec as yours in a five door but without satnav (so the costs should even out) and without park assist ($1400) on the road for $48,500 brand new, get it this week. That was retail - I got no corporate discount. Factor that in and the price needed to get the same specs could be even less.

For buyers to consider second hand I think the price has to demonstrate a substantial saving over retail and be compelling. For me that means the saving needs to be at least 7-8k over retail for something second hand. That would be comparing like for like so in your case I reckon maybe 41k or around that would be reasonable.

You can see sellers all day on carsales with prices approaching or exceeding new. They just arent going to get it. Believe me as someone who changes cars every 18-24mths the second hand market isnt going to pay near or full retail. Retail is cheap enough for buyers to convince themselves (such as in your case) that spending an additional 3.5k or even 5k (to get the same spec with park assist BRAND NEW, no kms on it, noone else driven it, no hidden accident history worries (not that I am suggesting yours has) and no finance or thrashed the be-jesus concerns) is money absolutely well spent.

It should be pitched cheaper than that so the margin is bigger and the value more compelling. Unfortunately the ability to get them new so much less than sticker translates directly to eroded resale values on the second hand marked. Your car is never going to be worth less that after the first year or two of ownership. Depreciation is a killer for those first 24mths but by mth36 it seems to plateau out.

The difference in price between 5- and 3-door is $1,500. Satnav and Park Assist combined are $3,900 - $2,400 more. Worth noting that in a comparison.

Last time I checked, the GTI was expected to retain around 65% of its value (based on full retail, no options, excluding taxes and charges) after 3 years. I'd guess the biggest hit would be as you drive it out of the showroom, and after that, you'd feel it around the 1, 2 and 3-year anniversaries. - but that's just a guess.

Fair call... that being the case if I bought that exact car it would have cost me around $49.5 or thereabouts. That excludes any consideration by buyers about the value of 5 doors versus 3 for passenger convenience etc...

Even at $49.5k I would still buy new than spend $45k on second hand. The difference is so close as to be worthless for me. THis is my experience only but - for the benefit of the OP - I was in this exact position not eight weeks ago and fully prepared to buy second hand till I saw the prices some of these private sellers were asking. Just not worth it for the worry/wear and tear and reduced resale when I offer the car to a potential third owner instead of second owner.

carsales.com.au is probably the biggest cars online ads, that's why. used to be $20, then they got listed at ASX and bumped up the fees to $60.
