Adjust / Calibrate the Parking Assist ?

I've been playing around with the parking assist and I get worried every time I use it that its going to scrape my wheels since it only leaves about 2cm between the wheel and the gutter!

Does anyone know if I can adjust the distance it parks away from the gutter? Another few cm and i would breathe a whole lot easier.

2cm sounds very close... havent heard about being able to adjust it though.

In saying that, I havent heard of any problems with it either - yet.

Easy, park the car yourself if you don't like how it parks.

Why would you want to alter the parameters of a system that has undergone extensive testing? The point behind using an automated system is to allow more efficient parking with consistency.

All smart ass comments aside - I think he's just being cautious. 2cm does sound very close - but I trust VW have their crap together.

I'd be expecting VW to foot the repair bill if by using the system I somehow trashed my wheels.

You can increase the distance from the kerb by starting the park assist process closer to the centre line of the road. Leave more of a gap between your doors and the car you are trying to park behind. Early on, I almost kerbed the Detroits a couple of times, only my intervention and the dipping left side mirror saving them from a nasty belting. It's a great system, but not foolproof.

In the meantime, my lovely missus decided the kerb the front right rim herself, saving me and park assist the trouble.

So all you need to do is leave a larger gap when you line yourself up to a parked car.

Heh, you'd have to need some luck to get VW to do this for you... they have disclaimers all over the place that it's still the responsibility of the driver to ensure that you don't hit anything (people, cars, kerb etc).

Well I don't exactly start out in the middle of the road, but I don't hug the car I'm about to park behind. I think the manual outlines the approximate distance, although I could be wrong. I don't have the car today to check. I think leaving a 1 - 1.5 metre gap is about right. I doubt I've started off any further away than that.
Much less and you'll start getting close to the kerb, but I'm sure other variables come into play.

I haven't got my GTD with park assist yet, but when I test-drove a 103TDI with the feature the dealer said to note the position of the car in front relative to the curb and be careful if it was real close. Park assist uses the sensors to line up on that car and you may need to be ready to intervene. I guess the car behind has a similar effect. Of course you need to be watchful anyway. I've ordered the rear view camera as well, which should help with this issue. I enjoyed my park assist demo and look forward to using it when my car finally arrives.

That's a shame was she parallel parking? You could have saved the $1400 for repairing wheels hehe.

Nope - she turned straight into a kerb while exiting a car park. "Didn't see it" was the reason. She gets one for free - that's it. Besides, it's not that bad - right next to the tyre along the very edge. Should mostly polish/sand out without needing pricey repairs.

While i'm sure its useful, Park Assist always struck me as a bit of a gimmick feature. You can probably rely on it to get it right most of the time, but you can't rely on it all the time. I think the odds of kerbing the car are greater if you rely on Park Assist, than if the driver did it manually with care... depends on your parrallel parking skills though!

It's easy to do if you try and park in an end bay with Kerb on one side.. I always try to keep one side free or park close to columns but must be harder for women (although I did it once in my last car).

Using park assist is the only way I'll ever see my wife parallel park, as she'd sooner drive around for 15 minutes looking for spot she can drive straight into.
