Do mean on the mirror glass or on the exterior? The area to the right of the dotted line on the drivers mirror is a wide angle so you can see your blind spot (think it's called aspherical?) -

You should really read the manual!

It's there to indicate the point at which the mirror starts curving outwards. It allows you to see the cars beside you, not just behind and to the right rear of your car.

it's the cut off between the normal mirror and the convex mirror section. The convex section is designed to give you a wider look so that it minimises the blind spot. But the downside is that it is harder to judge the distance with convex mirrors

I guess you must have had the "quick" version of the dealer delivery run-through....

Even without convex mirrors, you can set a car up so there are NO blind spots. Exterior mirrors aren't meant to be for behind the car - that's what the interior one is for...

Very true Rocket36! But these convex mirrors just make it that much easier!

They should replace "objects appear closer ...." with "RTFM" on the mirrors.

Yeah, they really should. It amazes me the amount of first time Volkswagen or even European car owners who don't take the time to look at the manual. I wonder just how many features the car has that are really cool and for which they have NO IDEA that it exists!?

Reading the manual from cover to cover isn't a prequisite for owning a VolksWagen. The response RTFM could be considered uneccesarily harsh. In my opinion it would be more appropriate to respond with; "It's in the manual, you'll find it on page xx."

I think that if you could explain things in a single page, they wouldn't bother with a 100 page manual.

The problem is that peoples ability to read something and follow varies so greatly with their background, education level, intellectual development, and existing subject knowledge, that it's just simply not possible to summaries all the features in something much shorter than the manual. If it were, they'd do it.

Just look around these forums and see how many pages that some of the threads take to explain the same thing in many different ways so that some individuals understand. Then imagine the difficulty that car manufacturers (or any manual writers) face when they don't have the chance of a two way interaction!

Now the weather is getting colder, the windows get misty in the morning. Apart from the heated external mirrors which are great, the interior demister directs air just where you need it to see the mirrors. Another simple, yet clever feature.

The manual is comprehensive and well indexed. I find it quite easy to find information.

As you say, your l/100km may vary.

It's part of the men's creed. 'as a last resort - read the manual'. It's over the page from 'put the seat up'.
