Picked up my car today - Checked the boot and it was made on 4/10! Fresh from the factory! Very happy with that.. not that it makes a lot of diff.. but juz the fact that it is really brand new!
...
Perhaps that means week 4, 2010. Makes rough sense time wise, built end of Jan, then say 1 to 2 weeks to get allocated to a ship for transport, 5 weeks shipping, 2 to 3 weeks for customs clearance and dealer prep. Takes you to around mid April...

That's the compliance plate. Volkswagen don't fly the cars out. There should be two months between the build date and compliance date for a car that leaves on the next ship after manufacture and is destined for a customer order/dealer stock/demo otherwise they can sit in bond for a while at the port and not be compliance until release.
Nearby there should be a built date plate (there was on the mk V next to it)
Just got insurance quotes from RAC and SGIO. New 2009 MY10 118 TSI was $100 more than 2010 MY 118 TSI as the 2009 Market Value was $4K lower than a 2010 and I would have to insure at Agreed Value and I couldn't get new for old coverage for the 2009 even though it would be bought new from the dealer.
Also, RAC has the 2009 TSI as a supercharged turbo, but the 2010 as just a turbo on their computer system which might account for the some of the higher quote for the 2009 at Agreed Value.

Picked up my golf yesterday. Definaty an 04/10 build and 06/10 compliance. It had been in the warehouse a fortnight atleast too, so yours is possible.
EDIT-Just noticed your post is 2 months old.... so no its not possible yours is an 04/10 build
On a similar theme. When selling a car second hand what year do you advertise?
Say you have a Nov07 build, Feb08 compliance, Apr08 first rego MY08 car.
Is it the build or compliance date that determines if its an 07 MY08 or an 08 MY08?

This is a contentious issue. Some swear by build date, others by compliance date. AFAIK, most dealers go solely based on the build date, although I've read on this forum that at least one WA VW dealer goes by the compliance plate.
I recently sold my MY05 Honda Accord Euro - it was a MY05 "series", Nov 04 build, Jan 05 compliance and Mar 05 rego. I advertised and sold it as an 05, and I'm sure you'd get away with same.
