  • Anyone else with a build date of week 5?

My salesman has told me that my tsi was build week 5. It was 'on water status' when I ordered it - It apparently left the docks in Germany on the 27/01/10.

How long does a car take to build - does anyone know?
Just seems peculiar as the 27th of the 1st is not the 5th week... or I wouldn't have thought so anyway. Technically I would not have thought it was a full 5 weeks into the year, and is the build date the date they finish it or start it?
Would be good to hear from anyone else that has a car coming.... that was also a build week 5.

    Hi there,

I have a week 14 build and to the best of my knowledge, the car will be built either this week or next. To answer your question, Wheels Car Magazine had an article stating that it takes roughly 25 hours to build a Golf.

        Hi Nic,

I recall reading that week 1 in VW terms was just January 1-3 (Fri-Sun), and by that calculation Week 5 was January 25-31. By that calculation, I struggle to believe that your car was built in week 5 and left the docks on the 27th - we're talking less than 3 days to build, transport from Wolfsburg to Bremerhaven, and load on board ship.

My car was built on the 6th day of week 10 - which I believe was Fri or Sat, March 5 or 6. It didn't leave the port at Bremerhaven until March 29.

          Hi Adam,

So going by that my car is due for a week 14 build... which means that it would have been built today?

Cars are moved around the slots all the time, if a country cancels orders for whatever reason at the last minute this leaves vacant space which they fill by bringing appropriate models forward.

              Hope this helps.

According to the dealer my Golf GTI which I ordered in Nov 09 was week 5 build. I'm not exactly sure when the ship arrived in Melbourne but I think it's around week 12 because the car was discharge on the 30/03/10. It's safe to assume that the ship left Germany either the beginning or the middle of February. Just under 3 more weeks before I get to pick up the car.

For what it is worth, my US spec. GTI was built on Jan 20, and was delivered on March 1. I wonder if the ships unload in the US first and then go onto Australia and NZ after that?

Perhaps yours was on the same boat as mine. When we were signing the paperwork, the dealer told us that the ship had just arrived that day (27th March)
He told us to expect it around the 15th April. Not long now..... just over a week.
Were you getting extra things fitted at the dealer?

Bluetooth and window tinting are dealer fitted. I was told approx two weeks for customs formalities and one week at the dealer for installation and preparation. Looks like there be more Golfs on the road at the end of this month.

So yours should be ready at the end of next week as well. I'm expecting to hear from the dealer Friday or Saturday to let me know it's in. I'm going in to have a look over it before they register it.

Assuming my interpretation of the build week is right, week 14 would be March 29-April 4. So if your car ends up being a week 14 build car, it may well have been built already.

Mine was slated for a week 6 build, but was delayed - quite possibly due to demand both in Australia and overseas. As Mav says, I don't think there are any guarantees until you have confirmation and a VIN from your dealer.

One of the routes is from the UK to Boston, then through the Panama Canal and across to NZ and Australia. My father's CC went that way. But most of the voyages I've noticed tend to head down the west coast of Africa to South Africa, before sailing across the Indian Ocean to Fremantle (WA), and then on to the eastern states.

Yeh, it depends on the size of the ship... Most of the really big ships can't fit down the Panama Canal and go around Africa instead. If it can go through the Canal, I believe that it does cut down a fair bit of time... as well as bypassing most of the pirates...

The tracker site shows that my Golf 118 TSI was loaded on vessel at Bremerhaven on 29th March. As my dealer is less than talkative person I couldn't get much information about my car order. From your information my car is also maybe week 10 or 11 build?

Before I signed the contract (10th March), the dealer told me that my car will be one of the Golfs shipped on 9th March - I guess the dealer did not give me accurate information.
