  • A Rattle/Something Shifting Underneath Me...

    It's a bit cryptic that title isn't it ?

I've now had my Mk6 for 2 months and have already done 7,000km (!!) and only in the last week have i noticed something unusual, and I'll do my best to describe it in plain English.

Sometimes when I'm taking off from a complete stop and sometimes when I'm braking and have almost stopped, I can feel something moving underneath my feet. If you placed your right foot about 3/4 way back from the pedals to the driver's seat, this is where it is.

It feels like something rolling forward and back but quite tightly as if in a case or something. I originally thought it was something I'd left under the seat rolling around, but to be honest I haven't really had a look under the seat yet to make sure it's something there (I have Bluetooth installed but don't think it's the box that goes under the seat).

Prior to going to VW to get it looked at, any ideas or has anyone come across this ?

My partner says she can feel something under the floor moving when I am braking. I personally have not felt / heard anything. This was only brought to my attention 2 days ago, so I am still having a feel around.

Okay, might be the same thing - sounds the same. Let me know what you see/find.

I am having trouble beleiving you are serious, but just in case you are, I have a strong suggestion - how about you have a look yourself first (which is what you should have done before creating this thread) ! I can just imagine what the VW mechanic will feel like doing to your car if he finds the warranty work id something of yours rolling around under the seat.

        Unbelievable !

Geez.....you post a query, and you get flames thrown at you

Greg, if you were in Melbourne I'd invite you to sit in my car and you'll experience what I'm talking about.

Yes, I have checked under the seats, but it's far more than that - it's not even anything under the floor mat - it's incredibly close to the chassis but as it's all covered, I ain't getting my hands dirty on it.

But thanks for your opinion anyway Greg.

There is nothing rolling in the car, it is transmitting through the floor. My partner has her legs stretched all the way forward against the floor and can feel it when I brake.

Bigmouthmedia, there are some people out there that just like to get agro about nothing much at all.

I'm sure you are fully capable of telling the difference between something mechanical rolling within the car chassis, and a tube of mints from under your seat.
Hopefully somebody else can give you advice that might help you out......

Isn't the idea of this forum to help each other?

Probably a coke can left in the chassis rail from the factory rolling around. Your drive shafts aren't under the floor either.

That's exactly what I'm talking about - it rolls around (but only in a small area of space) about where your left foot would sit if it wasn't on the clutch/footrest. It happened quite a few times today to me, so as I'm up to 7500km, I might do the oil change and get them to look at it at VW.

BMM, I'm sorry if you feel I over-reacted, but I think my criticism was reasonable in the light of the information you posted. Feel free to fault my logic.

In your first post you stated :

Originally posted by bigmouthmedia View Post

I interpreted that to mean that you have a noise under your seat but you hadn't bothered to look there yet to see if there was anything rolling around inside the cabin. That irritated me because you appeared to be too lazy to carry out the most basic check before posting a query. If you had said that you HAD checked before posting I would never have reacted the way I did.

You then posted to say :

Originally posted by bigmouthmedia View Post

So it still seems likely to me that you made your first post before physically looking under your seat, and I make no apology for calling you out on that. If I am wrong then it is only because I relied on your information in your original post (and that was all that existed at the time I posted).

You're welcome. I have lots of opinions, some helpful, some useful, some rants, some telling people things they don't want to hear. Plenty to go around. This is the interweb, often you only get as much as what you pay for. Just ignore the stuff you dislike, I won't mind

Yeah, and bigmouthmedia also mentioned that it'd be near where the driveshaft would be, even though the Golf isn't a RWD or AWD car...

But still, your post was a bit rude. Coming very close to the line of receiving an infraction. It was more that bigmouthmedia responded nicely to your post and that it didn't turn into an exchange of nasty words that saved you from such

Anyway - moving on, I'm interested in finding out what this is, so please post the response of the dealer after you've visited them bigmouthmedia

Remember also that we all love our cars - even if we are not particularly mechanically minded....

And in the end I'm no mechanic, I only know the basics - and sometimes write before I think......but it was a query in the first instance to see if anyone had been getting the same issue (which they have) and if there was any fix for it.

                              Harmless !

PS - have amended the original post - no more driveshaft for me

PS 2 - Nic, shame the hail got the better of your first Golf (I luckily got some warning and stored it under a carport, just in time....) - bet you're looking forward to having this car a lot longer
