Fitting stock RVC to GTI

Can someone kindly confirm or deny that it's not possible to have the OEM rear-view camera retro-fitted to a Mk VI GTI with an RCD510 (ie - not sat nav).

I was quoted $500 by the dealer at the time of sale (last year) to have this done, but at my first inspection service last week I was told that not only is this not possible, but VWA are 'thinking about' introducing a kit later down the track to allow this, and it will be somewhat more expensive.

It can be done, I guess it's just such a PITA that the installation cost would probably be more than the RVC itself (i.e. you'd be paying over $1000 for what could've been put on the car for only $500 to start with).

The price you were given at the time of sale was the factory option price NOT a retrofit price. If VW are now developing some new kit, it would probably be wireless to avoid this extensive installation process.

It'd have to be a mistake. Either didn't include labour. Or not the genuine parts. It's $500 from the factory.

You might want to check what was involved, as coreying said it's not going to be the factory unit as the dealers cost price on that is not far off $500 and that doesn't include the custom loom for the hatch.

Plus the RCD 510 most likely doesn't have the video input required, AFAIK they are not shipping standard with the video input unless you order the RVC (this may have changed recently).

Even a good VW mechanic is going to take 3 hours to fit the RVC and 2 hours to make the loom so there's another $500-$750 there.

$500 camera + loom to front.
$100 hatch loom.
$500-750 labour.
$1100-$1350.

The retail price for the camera is around $850, the loom $150 and the parts for the rear hatch loom $150 in Australia so it's unlikely the dealer could even do the price I listed above even selling at cost and it's probably closer to $1700 for a dealer to retrofit.

Reverse Camera

Hi all,

The car that i have purchased (waiting on deliver) does not have a Reverse Camera. It does have the Park Assist and its a GTI6 so i assume it will come with the additional sensor/information on the RCD510 screen.

If i wanted to have the reverse camera retro fitted;

A. Is this possible as i think its a factory item to be done via VW dealer
B. Look at an aftermarket solution.

Issues with option A is that you pay top dollar but its well integrated into the car
Issues with option B is that it most options are not integrated and may end up looking tacky

Anyone have an aftermarket solution that is well integrated? Ballpark prices would be appreciated.

Sadly, as a retired electronics engineer, I have to say this will be expensive.
First, this is a non standard installation. there are no specific instructions.
Second, assuming all the 'bits', including adapter harness etc, and or extra modules, (RCD510 is multifunction display)
are available from factory. (Plus cost of sending special order)
Then consider problem of Auto Tecnician of installing special order. Cost/Time wil be high.
Perhaps consider dealer fitted standard unit with screen beside rear vision mirror?
OK, not so elegant, but can still achieve 60% of option.

Specific instructions, part numbers and so forth (the mark 6 installation doesn't requite sheet metal cutting and has a minor change to the harness so is quicker - a separate guide will be done shortly for the mark 6).

Just thought I'd ask whether anyone here has organised to have RVC retrofitted to a MKVI GTI through the dealership.
I've had a look on the forum, and have seen a couple of threads about DYI retrofits, as well as a few pieces of hearsay, but am just after the facts.
If anyone has had this done, it would also be great to hear what kind of prices are being charged.
I ordered a GTI about 3 weeks ago, but because I was after one ASAP had to choose from the cars already on the ship. Got the car with as many options as possible, but unfortunately none of the cars had RVC or Xenons....

I called a couple of dealers asking about a retrofit for my R... none of them would do it, they told me to call European Autotech here in Sydney. EA quoted $1800 for it... ended up just doing it myself, probably cost less than a grand.

My dealer just called - now they say they cannot do the RVC but can offer an aftermarket option which I obviously dont want. I need to decide whether to get the after market from them, accept a refund and live without an RVC, or try and source a car with one. My last two cars had front and rear OPS which were great but my other cars havent so I guess I could just get used to parking carefully again.

Anyone here installed reversing sensors after market - just the ones that beep as you approach an object. My wife has them on her 2011 Liberty and they work okay and would suit my needs I suppose.

Advice???

Give Derek ( European Autotech) a call.
He can source and fit the oem RVC for you.

Good move... getting the RVC fitted after market would have cost you more than that anyway, plus, you get ACC, which is worth its weight gold
