    • Just get an aftermarket head unit then, that does iPod & Bluetooth.

      • was lucky to get my hands on the new iphone 4 and I must say it works much better with MDI than my old 3g! skipping is non existant and songs appear quicker on mdi too when plugged in. no problems of replugging to see the songs too as it used to happen often with 3g often.

Hey nice.. nice looking phone. I have an iPad, 3GS etc.. is it true about the reception dropping out if you hold it a certain way? How do you compare it to the 3GS you had?

The resoloution is a lot better things open up instantly, its lighter in weight but also more slippery when you hold it. for instance I run radio pocket tunes in the background while using safari and having tom tom running with no issues! as far as bar drops does not happen at all have not had a call dropped once. Really dont know what is the fuss about!

            • Hi all,

Sorry if this question has already been asked and answered, but I got about half way through this thread trying to find out and got sick of all you boys bitching about who knows what, who doesnt, who hates apple etc....ha ha

I have used my iphone in the car (factory fitted MDI) since the day I got it without any hassles. I have since plugged in a ipod instead, and now when I try to plug the iphone back in it doesnt work. Its recognised on screen, I can choose a song but it just wont play. When I go to the 'now playing' screen or whatever you call it, it still shows the last song that was playing before I unplugged the ipod.

Any suggestions on what to do would be appreciated... I have tried unplugging it and trying again, as well as ignition on and off, not sure why its doing this.

              Ta
              Mel

              • Not worth doing any audio upgrades due to the **** house non gapless problem with the MDI.

Wrecks a good compilation so i'd recommend after market HU.

I've had my MDI lock up a couple of times now. On one occasion the iPod continued to play (and move to the next track in sequence), but no amount of button pressing would change tracks or affect playback, and the display wouldn't update. The other time, the music just stopped, and the MDI refused to accept any commands, update the display, etc etc. On both occasions, the iPod remained responsive (although my iPod has locked up on its own plenty of times too).

On both occasions, leaving the car with the iPod unplugged and the ignition off for 20 minutes gave the MDI time to shut down and hence be restarted, and all was okay subsequently.

Maybe Maverick knows of a way by which you can reboot the MDI (or the headunit - RCD-510 or, in my case, RNS-510) without having to wait the requisite 20 mins?

                  • Well my MDI has now completely kaput. I've tried multiple iPod's, multiple USB sticks and the MDI wont even display on screen.
Taking it to the dealer to have it looked at.

                    • I've had it not recognise the ipod for no apparent reason twice now. The fix is to reboot (the car), and presto it works.

                      It's called character.

                      • And I've got my iPhone's battery screwed by the charging function of the MDI. Kept plugging in and unplugging during my driving killed the battery and ended up with an iPhone battery that won't hold charge. Had to replace the battery of my iPhone

The MDI doesn't control the charging, it provides a constant 5V to the iphone and it's the iphone that decides when to charge and when not to charge so if you want to blame anything it's the iphone which has screwed up charging logic, a faulty charging circuit or a faulty battery (or a combination of all three).

                          • It's never good practice to have a battery constantly being slightly drained and then charged up. At least once a month drain all the juice out and then fully recharge. This will maintain a healthy battery. For example, my 6 year-old iPod is still going great, the battery still lasts for many hours. Another tip: Don't leave your iPod in a hot car. As the saying goes, batteries die in hot cars... or something like that

Update on my MDI: The MDI was faulty, it was replaced. No idea what was wrong with it, no power was even going to the devices.

This is true for nickel-cadmium (NiCad) and nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries, but doesn't apply to lithium-ion batteries.

                              • In my mkvi golf I have these problems. If I don't manually change the song, when a new song comes out it displays the name of the old song and will stay on the old song until I manually change it. Also I have playlists and sometimes I like to shuffle my songs. The stereo in the car either selects mix folder or it plays something completely different. And the only way to get it to comply is to hit shuffle in a playlist and then hook it up, but if I press back to hear a song again it ends up re shuffling everything
