You put the car into drive, but the radio display and beeping carries on for another 5 or more seconds. Maybe VW do not want systems switching in and out too quickly so build delays into things.
The beeping stays on so that it can do it's job whilst you're driving forward. It will turn off when you get over 15km/h... it's got nothing to do with delays.

Anyway... the situation you're describing is similar to one that was described here a year or so ago by a member (can't remember who) who had a really long drive way up hill. When he got to the street which was flat, the car would hold gear up to 5000+ rpm before it would change. He was upset because his car was still cold etc. Pretty much the only option was to manually upshift.

No offence if he's still around here and reads this

I suppose it is a by-product of the complex control systems, and comes down to a case of the the particular combination leaving the system believing the car is still on an incline and needs to remain in the lower gear.

I will get a chance to test it again as I make trips to the Engineers Australia presentations generally monthly. Next time, I will try and select manual mode before I go up the hill and see if that changes things.
Ok I tried this left turn in Chatswood on the way home today - went up the hill (bit of a struggle!) got to the top, stopped, turned left and it shifted up into 2nd very quickly for me... just like normal

          • seems like everybody's DSG have their own personality. mine tends to hold its gears a tad longer after doing some steep climbing but once flat, doesnt ever revs past 3k. guess it takes some time for it to figure out its no longer going uphill.

but like most people, i tend to get annoyed at it reving unnecessarily and upshift manually.

            • I'm still learning the vagaries of DSG, and typically drive in manual mode (lever left, using the paddles). Pulling out into traffic, steering and accelerating, I often lose track of the paddles, so I've taken to hitting the stick for the first gear change, then using the paddles after that.

I've also discovered that it will change back to 1st at a higher speed than if left in D, so I've started using D around carparks. And forget that it's still in D when I pull into traffic, so I hit the stick for the first upchange, and knock it into neutral. Oops.

                • DSG Clicking,

Does anyone else notice the DSG "clicking" occasionally when changing down gears at slow speeds. It happens only from time to time and I always put it down to the second clutch selecting the next gear but thought I would see if it was normal

haven't noticed it in mine. the only sound i notice is when i'm reversing, the first time i tap the brake there's a "clunk" sound which i can also feel through the pedal... don't think it's DSG related though

                    • Oops!

This morning, I spent several hours running around the hills in a traditional manual - with a clutch pedal.

Tonight, driving into town, inching up to a red traffic light, I got a little distracted with "new stuff" in my new car. Light turned green, I was still distracted, and wasn't ready to move off, so I instinctively threw in the clutch pedal.

Of course, this time I was in the Golf, which doesn't have a clutch pedal, so the pedal that I tried to stomp to the floor was the brake.

There is a street in Chatswood that is very steep. No problem driving up it, but when I get to the top and stop, on getting moving again, the DSG does not want to change up for quite a few seconds. It is not slipping or anything like that, just that it takes around 5 or more seconds of driving before the transmission will change up, no matter the speed. It does not redline but the rev limiter does kick in and stop you over revving the engine.

There are no alarms or other indications.

This has now happened twice when I have had to get to a meeting in Chatswood.

For those interested, this is driving south on Edgar Street and then climbing up to Centennial Avenue when I have to stop because of a spoon drain. Then it is a left turn into Centennial Avenue and now the transmission will not change up for a few seconds.

It is the combination of circumstances, because I drive up similar slopes elsewhere without any issues. It is almost as though the slope is causing issues after coming to a complete stop and then starting off again. I don't lose drive, just that it won't change up for a few seconds.

As I said, there are no alarms or other indications so it is doubtful that any faults would be logged.
Mine does this. I reckon the car thinks there's a steep hill and it better not shift up. It gets annoying - it's the reason I'm considering getting a Golf R / Scirocco wheel with the paddles so I can flick it up a gear quickly!

Mine is now slipping in 5th gear, booked in to have a quick checkup next Friday, will let you guys know how I go...

                        • A follow up on the failure to change up automatically after going up a reasonably long, very steep road and then immediately turning left on a level intersection.

I had to attend another meeting at Chatswood the other day, and this time I was prepared. As I got to the bottom of the hill I pushed the selector away from me to engage "manual" mode. When I got to the top and came to a stop, the transmission automatically changed down to 1st. I turned left and changed up manually, and then brought the transmission back into Auto, and all was well.

All I can put it down to is the damping of the tilt sensor that had not quite allowed the sensor to realise that the slope was no longer there.

Oh hey, I've got that EXACT problem, doesn't really bother me, but missus said drives her nuts.

Sometime there's the clunk and then the brake "grinds". Only happens when brake and reversing.

Makes me think that the brake pad/caliper is shifting when the rotor changes direction (reverse) and brakes applied.

My brake pads are low, so I'll see if it's better after changing the pads.

As usual, VW said it didn't notice anything when I mentioned it last service.

Should have nothing to do with DSG as it can happen 10 seconds after shifting into reverse, whereas if DSG related, it'll happen when shifting.

                              • yeah I need a new Mechatronic too. Got clutch packs replaced to eliminate the 2nd gear shudder and got some weird shifting and black smoke out the exhaust.
Went back to the dealer and diagnosis shows I need a new mechatrinic.... Yes, still under warranty
