95RON or 98RON petrol in GTI mk6?

I am aware that the new GTI runs fine on 95RON as the recommended petrol.

However I also know that 98RON is cleaner and apparently gives superior mileage.

Does anyone have any comments on whether pumping 98RON fuel would actually be beneficial? Is the extra cost (15c difference in my area) actually justified?

I only refilled 98RON for my previous MK5 Golf. Because I did not drive a lot, the refill only cost me $50-60 per fortnight. I'll keep using that for my GTI.

Yes its worth the extra money.
Lower octane petrol makes the car less powerful and over time will crack manifolds and damage other parts due to its hotter burning.
You get a leaner, more efficient burn with the higher octane, especially in a Turbo car. It will go further on the higher octane, so it will end up costing the same.
Worth remembering also that Australian 95 is 3rd world standard of petrol and is probably about 91 octane in German terms.
Its an expensive car, if you are gonna cheap out on the petrol, you should buy a Camry.

Yeah - it comes down to how much you love your car!
I'll personally be sticking with 98 octane.

Also, if you flash the car, 98 octane is a given

BP Ultimate all the way for me - never used anything else since new in my Euro, nor will I do with my GTI. Definitely worth the extra price based on what I've read.

Driving interstate through some backwater towns you may find it difficult to find 98Ron fuel.
That is the only reason i can see for not using 98Ron.


However if you were smart you would fill up in the bigger backwater towns and plan your trip around this/carry a jerry can.

98Ron is the way to go!

One review I read touted the GTI's ability to run on 95ron as a marked saving to the hip pocket. Not being a mechanic I was wondering if this ability came from mods to the engine which protect it and allow just as good and safe perormance from less pure petrol. If this was the case, I'd stick with 95. Those that shout from above still say 98 for sure, so I'll follow their advice.

It's good to know it can run on 95 if you get stuck, but 98 is still the way to go - pay a bit more at the bowser but get better performance and economy.

Even my 1.6 ltr 2004 mk4 golf only got 98.. so my 2010 GTI will only get 98 or better if available...if it EVER ARRIVES!!

the engine will run very happily on 95 RON fuel, but you won't get the same level of performance out of it.

95 does work out cheaper in the long run if it is a daily driver & you aren't always wringing it's neck!

What a load of crap... If it's marketed as 95RON you have to accept the rating is around 95RON. Just like if you purchase 98RON you have to accept it is around that RON rating.

As far as I am aware RON means the same here as it does in Germany.

I would agree with that if I there was not difference between Shells 95 and BPs 95
car runs very different (thats why I try not to use Shell)

I've always put 98 in all my cars, especially turbocharged ones. I even put it in my Corolla every now and again even though it didn't need it.

It's a small price to pay for peace of mind and the extra performance kms it gives.

If I'm paying $40000+ for a car, I'm not going to skimp on 10 - 15c a litre at the petrol station.
