  • Has anyone seen a 3DR GTI in the flesh?

    Hi Guys,

About 2 months ago I posted that in Smail St, Ultimo (Sydney) I noticed what I thought was a 3DR black GTI. I wasn't 100% sure so didn't comment further. Well I saw the car today, got a good look at it and its definitely a 3DR GTI (on standard 17" wheels). It doesn't look at that bad but I actually prefer the 5DR look.

Has anyone else seen a 3DR GTI on the road? Seeing this one on the road 2 months ago and about 20 5DR's since but no 3DR's is odd.

I guess it was one of the first and all the others are on order much like the rest of us.

Yes, i have seen a red and a white 3dr both with 18'. both in Sydney CBD, followed the red one up Pitt St. thought the 2 GTIs travelling together looked good, doubted anyone noticed.

the red one looked good, the white not as nice. (relatively)

the 18' made the difference (the 17s are my only regret)

Looked at a black 3 door GTI at Barloworld dealer around November 09. Vehicle was on lot for some time before it sold. Still prefer the look of the 5 door. Black does soften the sharp edges on the GTI (CS the same).

      Cheers.

Yeah - Denlo at Parramatta have a red one on their lot. I was up there last Saturday. It's awesome. They had several red 5 doors there too - so there was plenty of cars to compare it to side by side.

With the change in 'design language' from the MK5 (curves and circles with little hard edges) to the the MK6 (straight lines and hard edges all over the place, except for the wheels!), I agree that the 5DR looks much better on the MK6 than the MKV - but I'll personally stick with the 3DR still

Bill Buckle had a white 3dr for a while, looked good. Not sure if it's still there or not, will have a look next time I drive past

3 doors look better than 5 doors, it is a real hatch. well in my opinion anyway.

                  Take note.

At the time I wasn't aware the 3drs would be harder to come by, so the only pic I took at the Driving Academy Day was this one...

Is there a reason why the 5 door one is the only one with a visible antenna?

                          Funny you should say that....
Just found this thread relating to the 3-door...It was my first choice/passion when looking at the GTI.
I thought they looked way sexier than the 5-door.
But now I'm looking at getting a black 5-door......

Thanks a great shot Lima. It definitely reinforces my love of the 3dr look, even with the MK6. Sure the 5 door in that picture has the better specs (sunroof, satnav, detroits), and the Silver looks boring as crap as a colour (well, to me personally), but yeah, give me a black or red (with the black one's options) in the 3dr and I'd be happy

The main issue I have with 5 door models is still feeling 'cramped' inside. That picture shows how much shorter the front doors are on the 5 door model well - the B pillar is right in your peripheral vision, and the door trim (arm rest etc) obviously finishes earlier too due to the door being shorter.
In a 3 door, the B pillar is back behind your peripheral vision and the door trim extends back further than your elbow can go. I love it

I share your sentiments Corey. I do find a lot of the Golfs I see are 5 doors. Nothing wrong with that, I've just always found the 2 doors more appealing.
