There are two great videos from Ask A VW Sales Guy on YouTube which cover this topic
Episode 7: How to replace the battery in a VW key
Do not try to pull apart late model key as shown in youtube. At least not for MY11 onwards.
Please refer to page 41 of the manual, under Vehicle Key, replacing the battery.
Re synchronising the key, please read page 42.
Take note how problem may occur. EG, perhaps battery not flat after all?MY13 Passat 130TDI Sedan. Autumn Brown Metalic, Desert Beige seats. Sat nav, Rev camera, Dynaudio, 12way adj seats. No ACC Previous Golf 118 TSI with ACC given to my son

Read the manual? [John McEnroe] You CANNOT be serious! [/John McEnroe]
However, having watched the video and noticing that my key is different from the one shown, I think a quick squiz at the manual might well be in order.
Cossor It was the Robot from Lost In Space that said Danger Will Robinson, not a Dalek. The Dalek would have just zapped him AND ripped apart his key. It's amazing what you can do with a rubber sucker on the end of a stick.MY10 Golf MkVI 103TDI United Grey

Consult the manual I did. And guess what, it does NOT give instructions on how to replace the battery. So much for the manual. Also the key I have is a little different from the one show in the manual. The red light indicator on the key is on corner opposite the key release and not in the center as the one depcited in the manual.__________________________________________________ _____________

I see some important information got lost in the crash. If your handbook is dated xx.2009 like mine is, it doesn't show the current key that we have in Australia.
To replace the battery:
1) Press the button that flips out the key
2) Turn the key over so the VW logo is facing upwards
3) Prise open the bottom half of the casing by pushing with your thumb in the aperture where the key sits when it's retracted. Be careful not to use excessive force.
This will reveal the battery, it's a CR2032 3V lithium.
Thanks to Corey R who originally provided the instructions.MY10 Golf MkVI 103TDI United Grey
